Hey guys so today basically I was just playing TF2 because I just got it and I played it for a while so I thought I would turn off my computer for 20 minutes and give it a bit of a cool down. I came back and turned it on and when everything loaded back up I suddenly noticed EVERYTHING was running VERY slow/sluggish, steam would take up to 5 minutes to load and TF2 would randomly freeze when I was joining a server or sometimes right at the main menu. I tried scanning with Mcafee and I found out that it's a piece of crap cause it wouldn't stop freezing. What the heck do I do?! If this computer breaks I will be SCREWED! Please help guys. If you need my specs here they are:
Processor- AMD Athlon(tm) 64 Processor 4000+ 2.60 GHz
RAM- 2047 MB
Graphics Card- Nvidia Geforce 7300 GT
OS- Windows Vista home basic 32 bit.

Maybe try a clean install of Windows 7? I did that when my computer was getting really sluggish, worked quite well.

Ya I know, I was playing it pretty good and my computer was running fairly fast but after the restart EVERYTHING was slow, mozilla firefox takes up to 4 minutes to open... I am scanning my computer right now, hopefully it finds a nasty virus or something.

This is just a shot in the dark, but it's been happening to my PC. When mine gets very slugish I go into the task manager and there is a program that is running called "Werfault" and it's always shows two of them running and both are using 50% of the CPU. I just click end program for them both and my PC is back to normal.

I Googled it with Yahoo LOL, and it turns out it's some sort of error reporting program from Microsoft. God knows why it would use 100% of the CPU though.

It happends once every few days and never while I was playing a game, just while surfing the web (do people still say that?)

BTW I'm using Vista 32-bit

Weird, I don't have anything called Werfault in my task manager but my CPU usage is 100%!! I need to find out what is causing this.

I also think it may be something do with Steam. I haven't played TF2 (which I presume is Team Fortress 2) but I get sluggish speed when playing steam games. Try running a System Defragment. This will help your computer speed and clear up some of the junk you might not even know about. Also, if it only seems to be happening when you run Steam, perhaps you have a virus to do with steam, like downloading cheats for a game or something...

defrag your pc and run cccleaner, run antispyware tools and virus scanners.. finally if none of this helps download HJT (hijackthis) here: http://free.antivirus.com/hijackthis/ scan and save a logfile and post a logfile here:http://forum.networktechs.com/

expect a reply within 3 days of posting if not earlier (as jholland isnt as quick on the draw as she used to be)

don't use Mcafee for one thing. That make's pc's run terribly slow or at least the 2 pc's I've came across with it on made it run terrible. Just get Avast antivirus or something.. You might want to run Malwarebytes too if Mcafee doesn't scan for that sort of thing. Uninstall some programs that are taking up a lot of cpu power in your processes.. It might have been some program you installed and needed a systems reboot in order for it to run. You might also want to run memtest just to be safe and know nothing bad happened to your ram.

I found out that my svchost.exe file got hijacked with a virus and Mcafee being the good antivirus program it is... didn't catch it. It took a couple hours but I think I solved it, it's still pretty slow so I am running some virus scans on AVG and then I will run a scan on Malwarebytes then just try anything else I can do.

The best anti virus/spyware is Microsoft's Security Essentials. I still cant believe you canplay TF2 wellwith on-board graphics.

I know your trying to be funny but if you actually look at the reviews of Microsoft Security Essentials it is actually ranked as one of the top anti virus software with Avast and AVG.

Ohhh... I know it's good, please don't get me wrong.... but far from the best. MS SecEss misses lots of things other catches. And reviews, you gotta be careful sometimes....remember Microsoft has lots of money they can put towards good reviews...

Maybe quit looking pornography? Tends to do this to computers.

Oh also, run scans with Avira free anti-virus top of the line detection rate and Malwarebytes. These two programs generally fix problems like that. However, if your computer is too much of a hunk of junk to run either of these programs at the moment I would suggest a complete and full system restore.

MODERATOR EDIT - Please post threads requesting technical support in the PC Hardware Discussion board. Thanks!
