Is it worth getting a cheap sound card (30 quid or so), or is the onboard sound good enough? Will I notice the difference between the card and the onboard sound?

Only if you have nice speakers, I wouldn't get a cheap one though. Mine cost me $90 and it makes a big difference on my Z-5500s.

Honestly, for games I didn't really notice a difference between my onboard and soundcard. But music was a BIG difference. That alone swayed me to buy a sound card.

I wouldnt. It's kinda one of those things that you think is useless until you get it. Even an Audigy SE would be a huge step over integrated audio in terms of sound quality.

It's one of the most overlooked upgrades in PC land. If people could sort of game with onboard graphics I bet they would which is why most people leave their systems with onboard sound.

Like everyone here said if you have good speakers then a new sound card is a must. I don't think any onboard audio offers EAX support, let alone the ability to give you the full sound a stand alone card would. Plus it's not really a big gain but it frees your processor up and will net you 2-4 extra FPS.

If you got a set of nice speakers are good headphones then i would opt for a decent soundcard.

Other than that, the onboard sound chip is fine.

I'm building a PC soon, and that's what I'm doing. As long as you get a decent Motherboard like theses guys said you won't really need one.
