Hey, I was wondering if there is any point in buying a sound card if you already have a 5.1 sound onboard and have a 5.1 speaker set up?

Generally speaking, you only need a high quality sound card when you have high quality speakers. You (like myself) probably don't need to worry about it.

I used to have onboard sound. Then I switched to a cheapo sound card and it made the sound so much clearer.  It also helps a little in games because it takes the load off the cpu.

Not all sound cards actuall process sound. Some just create the channels and let the processor handle them.

I agree, upgraded from ac97 to an audigy se. Onboard sound is often of mediocre quality. Although, like the other poster said, don't expect to see any performance boost.
