So I was thinking of getting a new sound card.  Right now my PC has integrated sound and I've heard that having a dedicated sound card can improve gaming performance.  Is this true and if it is, how much of an improvement could a sound card make?

It also tends to give you better sound, the small performance gain is an added bonus and often depends on the game. Do a search for some sound card benchmarks so you get an idea of the performance issues.

Remember that Vista does not support hardware acceleration. So if you buy a Soundcard and have or are planning to get Vista don't bother.
