Hi, I'm the new guys here, You may know me from my gaming TV thread. Anyway I just purchased a nice shiny brand new 46" Panasonic Plasma ST30 for all my TV needs (mostly gaming). This TV will be my first ever HDTV, so glad to finally rid myself of CRT. Anyway since I am very knew to the HDTV world I am now trying to decide what a good sound system / home theater system would be. I don't know much about this stuff but from other reading including some on these forums I've seen that the brand home theater in a box stuff isn't that great. I am going to be doing a lot of research on this today but I thought it would be good to ask here and see what others think during my research process. This TV setup will be used for both movies and gaming on PS3 XBOX 360 (mostly gaming). What are some good quality system that aren't much over the $300 range?

Depending on how you want to budget yourself, I would recommend this in the $300 range.

Onkyo HT-S5400 ($300):

While it is a home theater in a box, unlike most companies Onkyo actually pairs a proper receiver with the speakers/powered subwoofer.

Though an alternative is to purchase a quality 2.0 or 2.1 system and slowly upgrade from there.

Would the 4 small speakers be easy to mount up in the 4 corners of my room?

Actually the 4 small speakers are rear speakers, so they woudn't go in the 4 corners.

The layout would be like this:

As far as mounting is concerned, they'll be easy to mount.

I've had home theatre systems for the last 18 years or so. I would suggest doing the research and spending around a thousand dollars or moreon a nice receiver. I have aYamaha. This may seem like a huge chunk of cash, but look at it this way: A receiver should last you years. My first receiver lasted me about 8 years and I finally upgraded (it didn't give out). So I would invest in something you will love for a long time. Yes new tech comes out, but listen unless you have gobs of money to spend NO ONE upgrades their home theatre system very often unless it's a wanky out of the box jobby. My advice: Bite the bullet and save. I have seven Paradigm speakers that have lasted me forever. Make sure the speakers you get are worthy of your system. Afterall, you could get a great receiver and have crappy speakers then it's all for nought. My Paradigms ran me a few hundred bucks each. One of the big things with speakers: Make sure what encircles the driver (round speaker part) is a rubber and not a paper/styrofoam make. The rubber will last and not crack = LONG speaker life. This is one of those things where you shouldn't skimp. Save my friend save your money. There's nothing better than a kickbutt home system. You'll be glad you waited :)

Realistically, for a small space you only need 5.1. I would also look at the Onkyo HTIB systems at your price point (maybe a few bucks more). Accessories4less is a very good dealer if you don't mind a refurb. Otherwise look for a good price on the HTS3400 (I think around $280 at newegg).
