(yes, we recently saw a similar poll regrading graphix.. but what about the hydrosonics, man?)

Ok, all y'all, dont be shy. Are you fanatic about your sound?

Will be satisfied with beeps and bleeps as long as the graphics kick ass? or,

Will you skip a game that pre-dates EAX HD 5.0,

Your Audio needs are: maximum full immersion?or,

the most basic cues as to whats happening on the screen?

Is your speaker system cheaper than your mouse ,or

Its as expensive as your entire system put together/?

Just How impotant is game sound to you ?

where do you see yourself in this relative scale.

There are drivers for almost all of the sound cards out there for Vista. The only thing is there is no EAX with Vista but if you have a Creative X-Fi sound card you can download Alchemy which is Creative's replacement for EAX.

Sound is THE thing for me.  Especially since I watch all of my movies on my tower as well as play games.

Sound is a very serious issue for me

While I'm aware of those more extreme... never the less..

           My Setup consists of:

-ProAudio 600watt 96khzDTS2 Reciever (division of PolkAudio, made in Poland)

-Audio Concept 5speakerset: 2x5ft (front L/R) 3x2ft (center,sur L/R) (made in Canada)

-AlphaTechnology 100wattRMS 10inch Active Subwoofer (Made in U.S.)

-Creative X-fi Platnium (Made in China)

-Sony MDRv600 StudioMonitor headset (made in Japan)

-A job that gets me home too late to use anything besides the headphones.....

BEAT THAT! (without getting all fanatic or anything....)

ps-Logitechs z5500digital recieves a kicks ass award for its price!!

I have exactly the same. I am satisfied myself plus using a receiver for pc games makes no sense unless the receiver has analog connections.

sound is THE thing for me too, but i don't watch movies on my computer, so i dont' have 5.1 speakers or anything like that.

i play, and make music with my rig.  (E-MU 0404 soundcard + decent stereo amplifier and stereo speakers.)

I have Xi-Fi Fatality and x-530 from logitech.  I am very happy BF2 sounds great, Supreme Commander sounds great, and company of heroes with surrond sound is probly the best thing you could here in your life.  x-530 was about 40 bucks more then my mouse.  But my mouse is a g5 from logitech.  The only problem i have is on some games i rather use a mic so once in a while ill switch to a headset /mic.

1st- my X-fi Platnium has an Optical Out and my Reciever has an Optical IN (surprise, surprise!)

my reciever, for that matter, has any kind of connection you can imagine (digital and analog wise)

2nd - Creative sells an analog-to-optical adapter for those with xtrememusic x-fi variety...

3rd- what you say is true about some cheapo or older non-dts recievers, but ultimately;

                                             recievers have more potential possibilities...

4th- THE ultimate solution would be a HighEnd StudioMonitor SpeakerSet, such as:

                                             M-Audio's fantastic Studiophile LX4's....and above...:D:D:D

I'm pretty sure audiophiles use other soundcards than creative. Creative's mostly for gaming. I use an Audigy 2 ZS and Klipsch Promedia 2.1's. All told, costs around $120. Guess I'm a cheapie. :D

I'm a huge sound buff as well. I got my consoles hooked up to an Yamaha 500w 5.1 Receiver, with a full 5.1 Athena Tech speaker system. My comp is hooked up thru my Digidesign Mbox into a pair of Yamaha NS-10's.

well I don't really care much about Graphics, but Sound is a whole different thing. Only when sound is at it's best that you can get the best atmosphere available.

The best examples of how great sound can be are FEAR, STALKER and Halo.

I didn't know how to vote (couldn't understand half the questions anyways), so I didn't. I don't use speakers at all. I have a pair of 5.1 surround sound USB (meaning no sound card needed) headphones. They have 3 speakers in each ear piece. I can hear where they are coming from. I can tell if they are behind me, in front, to the right, to the left, above me, or below me. So I am good. I rarely do anything with my PC besides play games. I like to make webpages from scratch using note pad and I sometimes listen to music and watch movies on it, but thats about it.......well besides surf the web.

I'd love to have the best of the best, but when it comes down to it, I'm not demanding much of my sound system. Until I'm extraordinarily wealthy, I'll always fall somewhere between the Audigy and the Skanky Ho set.

Huh? I'm no audiophile--I voted skanky ho--but I'm not sure what the above statement means. Since nearly all current motherboards offer on-board sound processing, a sound card is never "needed"... no matter what output device you're using (speakers, headphones, fancy or cheap). Today, aftermarket sound cards are purchased purely for the sake of augmenting audio quality or capabilities (or to offload resoure consumption).

There's your output device and what it's capable of, and then there's the actual sound processing unit, and what it's capable of. You need both. You, my friend, are using your system's on-board sound processor.

What I meant by no sound card neededwas, I don't need a sound card to get really good sound because I am using USB. Understand what I mean now? :D
