soundcard identification

how do i find out what soundcard i have? i'm having some problems with cod4 and it might be because i have an onboard realtek soundcard or something.

If you're running XP, just open Start -> Run. Then enter "dxdiag" into the textbox and it will scan your PC's hardware. When it's done goto the Sound tab.

No idea how to do this in Vista...

I have Vista, but it doesn't show in Dxdiag.

If you don't have specific audigy drivers, etc, then you probably are using onboard sound.

Fire up the Device Manager and expand the section called "Sound, video, and game controllers". In there will be your sound devices and some other things.

If you can't find it in that section of the Device Manager, and there aren't any unknown devices listed in the Device Manager as well, I'd have to wonder if you even have a sound card. One possibility is that the integrated sound codec on your motherboard is disabled in the BIOS. (It would really help if you gave us a screenshot of the Device Manager with that section expanded, though-you might be disregarding something that actually might be your sound card.)
