I have a question for all you fellow geeks out there, what's the deal with graphics lately?

I mean, I can play HL2 (all ep's), Portal, FEAR, COD4, BioShock and Far Cry and they look great and play great, no lag or skipping. And then I fire up Crysis or Time Shift and they look great (no real decernable graphic difference to me) but they play as slow as the release of Duke Nukem Forever!!!

Here's my system specs:

Windows XP SP-2
AMD Athlon 64 Processor 3400+ 2.4GHz
RAM 1024 mg
Hard Drives 250 gig & 160 gig
nVidia GeForce 7600GS 256MB

I guess part 2 of my question would be, is there anything else I can do (already have graphics set low) to make things faster? Or do I have to start saving up for a better machine?

One word to answer all the questions: optimization.

You have to continually upgrade your machine to be able to play the latest games. It's not a lately thing, though - that's how things are. Your GPU is from 2005, your CPU is also showing its age (but is probably gonna be okay for a little while), and 1GB ram just doesn't cut it any more.

You don't need a new machine. Stick in another gig of ram and, if you can, get whatever 8 series card you can afford and you'll be able to play stuff like Crysis at anywhere from medium to very high, depending on your GPU. If you can get a dual core CPU as well, and an 8800GTS 640 and you'll be set until some time in 2009, or better.

Well, I guess that is an entirely new PC, almost. C'est la vie.

First off, thank's for the helpful advise, I'll try to upgrade 1 thing at a time so it's less costly.

Now I have 1 more question, if you don't mind...

Does creating another user in xp just for gaming and shutting everything off (virus, internet, background, etc) and optimize all I can help run these games better?
