^^ question
... what year did you get or built your first computer?

1995
144mhz processor
500 mb hd
I cant remember the ram I think it was 2 mb
8mb video card I think
15 inch monitor bleow 800X600 I know that but I cant remember the exact resolution
DOS
The first one I owned was an atari 400. Wow, I remember loading the game zaxon from an audio tape that took around 45 min to start up (that is if it didn't glitch out) I would wake up extra early on Saturday morning just to start loading a game....wow we've come along way.
The following is from myoldcomputer.com "Introduced as an entry level computer based on the same MOSTEK 6502A processor running at 1.70 MHz with 16K of user RAM built in. It had a membrane ****keyboard (not very touch type friendly) with 62 touch sensitive keys and 4 special keys to the right of the keyboard. It stood out amongst the other computer offerings of the day with its graphics and sound capabilities. It was capable of producing 128 colors on the screen using the CTIA video processor and up to 256 colors with the upgraded GTIA video processor chip used on later versions of the computer. The 400 was first amongst the early computers to be able to display 4 programmable screen objects simultaneously called 'Player-missiles' (also known as 'Sprites' on Commodore computers). This was at a time when the most computers produced only monochrome displays or very primitive 8 color screens. The graphics were handled by a custom chip called the "ANTIC" (CTIA/GTIA). This chip was designed to work as a sort of co-processor to take the work load away from the main processor to display graphics and color on the screen."
First computer was a Mac PowerBook Duo 270c
It had a 33MHz 68030 processor, 16MB of RAM, 340MB hard drive, 8.5" screen, and external CD drive. I used Macs up until 1998.
First Wintel PC was a P2-333, 128MB of RAM, ATI Rage AGP video, and Windows 98/NT 4.0 dual boot. I did own a Pentium Classic 200 at the same time as the P2-333, but that was a second hand thing that I used only for the DOS games that I didn't want messing with the settings on my brand new P2. :)

I was the same way - although I can't remember the specs of the first Mac I technically owned. I believe it was a Power Mac, but the only hardware I ever dealt with on it was changing the video card to a PCI ATI Rage Orion card to play Unreal.
The first computer I build was pretty much a junker - Pentium III, Intel motherboard with onboard graphics (worked fine for Diablo II), a fairly big hard drive at the time (20GB), 128MB of RAM, and the rest of the parts were acquired cheaper than online retailers at a computer fair (nothing like buying a motherboard at a place where they're unlabeled and the only protection is offered by an ESD baggie if you're lucky). The computer wasn't a gaming machine, I used it mainly for listening to music, internet surfing, and naturally the occasional bout of Diablo II/Starcraft.
Ahh.. I think it was quite good for the year 2000..
It was Pentium 3 (No idea what mhz)
440 MX Geforce! (WOoOoOW)
Some unknown Creative Audio Card
Intel Motherboard
Unknown amoutn of Ram.
And and I still have the parts in my room... :D It's in the upper shelf in my room.. Standing and dusting..Though it looks old and I like it :)
I only computer's i used were from friends, family or school,i never owned one,but i will build one by the end of summer with:
X2 3600
1GB DDR2 667 CORSAIR VALUE RAM (Can't afford 2GB ATM)
eVGA or XFX 8600GT (Both are $100 after MIR)
BIOSTAR TF560 A2+
It'll be a HUGE jump from what i use now (you don't wanna know...)
2 1/2 years ago I built my first computer. After seeing Doom 3 and hl2, I didnt want to miss out. It felt so amazing playing those games on max settings.
Athlon 64 3800 939 pin
1GB ram
320 GB hdd space
480W psu
2 6800 ultras in SLI
A Compaq that i got from my uncle was my first pci believe. I dont remember the exact specs of it but it must of had 64mb of ram (because i remember bringing it up to 128mb) and probably an Intel i386. The other specs are beyond me because that was a really long time ago.
I was lucky enough to have a dad who needed computers for his work. When he would get a new one, he will give me the old one to me to use. I still remember the p1 200mhz way back. The 200mhz was 10x time better then the 486, it ran civilization ii way better.
My very first computer I bought came in 2001.
Dell Deminsion 4400
PIII 933mhz
PC133 256mb memory (upgraded it to 512 two years later for morrowind)
40 gb hard drive
geforce 2 32 mb
sound blaster sound card
all for $1300
At the time it was a great computer. When I go to the store for a game I didnt even look at the specs on the box, because I knew my computer could run it.
I know a lot about how to build/buy a computer now, but I have never bought a computer. This fall, I will build my first two computers, but that is not very interesting. So, I will tell you about my grandpa's first computer.
8Mhz
4 - 16 MB ram don't remember.
I think the vga had 4MB ram
It might have had a 1GB HDD
It was a steal at $4000. And people want to complain about the price of modern computers.

It is intersting to think that quad-core owners will be saying the same thing in less than 10 years.
Oh, let me see if I can remember. My absolute first computer, which we found on the curb somewhere, was a Pentium 1 which could go into turbo mode at a blazing 166Mhz!!! It ran Windows 95 and had 128MB of RAM, I think, and probably not much Hard Drive space. I was 8 or so when I was using it, so I had no idea what i was doing. I mostly used it to play CD-ROM games from the local library.
The next computer was some horrible IBM contraption that my friend got so loaded with viruses/trojans/spyware that it was completely unusable. Next was a Dell Optiplex GX1, or something like that. It came with a 400 or so Mhz cartridge-type Pentium 3 that I upgraded with a 800Mhz Pentium 3. It had 256MB of RAM and came with Win 98. I installed Windows 2000 on the 20 GB or so HDD. It was good enough to play Windows Flight Simulator 98 and the Sims. It lasted me for about a year until my parents bought me a 3rd Revision eMac for Christmas in 2004.
Such a lovely computer; it came with a 1.25Ghz G4 processor and 256MB of DDR333 RAM. The onboard Radeon 9200 32Mb let me play games like Tony Hawk 4 decently, and BF1942 horribly. I played BF1942 for such a long time along with the Desert Combat mod. I upped the RAM to 512MB a little before getting WoW. I played WoW for a good year or so adn eventually got bored of it. I sold my account a few months ago for $300 then went and bought a AM2 motherboard, a GB of Wintec RAM, and a decent case. A month ago my dad bought me a 250GM HD and a 4600+ X2. Now I'm trying to get a job so I can get a Sapphire 2600XT and a Xcilo Stablepower 460W PSU.
Seacrest out.
It was an old DEC Rainbow. Don't know the specs, but i know that digital wasn't into the pc standard. I think they used their own cpu. It used separate rgb connectors. When i was little i thought it was cool to unhook one of the them and make the screen change colors. It had something like a 10Mb HDD and 2(!) 5 1/4 floppy drives.

This doesnt have to be just quad-core. I remember when p1 200mhz was the best cpu on the market. Now look at it, you cant run any programs todayon a system with a 200 mhz cpu. Every computer at its time is a great computer. Software and hardware advancements throughout the years will make the great computer quickly out dated. Its nothing new and its been happening many many years now. I know enough about computer four years from now my great computer quad core cpu, will no longer be great and I will have to replace it.
My first one was 1996-1997
Pentium 1 @133mhz
32 mb of ram
Onboard 1mb video.
2.1 Gb harddrive
04dcarraher
Exactly what I had when I first bought it in 1997.
I don't remember the exact specs, but this what I know:
Packard Bell-
-Intel processor @ 22 Mhz
-4 MB of RAM
-1x CD-ROM Drive
-'5.25 in. Floppy drive
-'3.5 in. Floppy drive
-Running Windows 3.1
-And I think like a 700MB HDD
I think we first got it in 1992. I could play Chips Challange on this bad boy :O22Toothpicks
Oh no...there goes that music again! It's gonna be stuck in my head till Tuesday, I reckon.
My first computer specs were:
Athlon XP 2200+
ECS Socket A mobo
Gf4 Mx 440 64mb
256 RAM DDR 400Mhz
Seagate 80 Gb ATA100 HDD
I only remember exact specs from the system right before this one it was one custom from dell.
Pentium 4@1.6ghz
256mb ddr ram (later upgraded to 512mb)
64mb GeForce 2
80gb hdd
Windows XP running 6 users lol.
Commodore 64 and i had an intellivision(i know its not a computer but just throwing that in there).
Its pretty funny how this thread definately dates the people who actually post in it.

I also have a Dell Dimesion 4400 but that Power Supply is dead.
1982 Commodore 64 with tape drive, upgraded the "system" with the 5 1/4floppy drive in'83, upgraded the motherboard to the 64C in '86 to ease repairs (soldering chips is not that much fun). Used this poor beast until 1989 when it was packed up and replaced with a 386dx. There are a few otherold players in here that remember the good old days...
It is possible to remember the exact pecifications for the first X86 system that I owned, but there had already been a CompuPro Z80 CP/M system before that, and an Apple ][ (note the odd use of brackets for the "2" in its name). Trouble is, I don't have the same clear recall on either of those. The Z80 had 64 MBs of RAM, and used an 8" fullsize floppy - the 5 1/4 that the Apple used was called a "Mini-floppy".
That CompuPro must've had a case made from armor steel, it was so heavy, but the interior of the case was practically empty if compared to later systems. My first X86 box was from 1982, and had no Hdd, just a pair of full-height 5 1/4" floppies that were capable of storing 180 KBs each. The 8088 chip ran at a speed of less than 5 MHz, and the MB only had sockets for 512 KBs of DIP type individual DRAMs. My system came with 256 KBs of those memory chips, my first discrete video card was monochrome, and it was only capable of displaying text in green letters on a black screen, no graphics.
It cost me over a month's salary, so I had to borrow from the employee's credit union to get it. The cost was close to $2500.
first one I had 66mhz cpu, 12mb ram, 500gb hdd. but hardly used it as my dad had a much better 750mhz amd, 128mb ram 20gb hdd
so my first real pc
2400+ sempron (was mean to be a athlon but couldn't fine any and had bough the mob was upgraded to 3000xp few months later)
512mb ram
120gb hdd
r9200se ( was pretty good for 2004 games and even ran splinter cell ct pretty well)
In '98, all i remember was that it had 2 gigs HD.
Guiltfeeder566
 most performance pc have as much ram now. amazing to think 1gb hdd used to sound like a lot
