Its a great game, but as a Splinter Cell game? I mean, it is a sequel and it is Sam Fisher, but its pretty different. Its like if you had a sequel to GTA IV that was a linear third person shooter starring Niko Bellic as he fought in the war. It would be a sequel, I guess, but eh.
Personally I love it, and it doesn't really require you to play earlier titles since it catches you up to speed well and is more its own story motivated by a couple of threads from previous games. One big issue though is the craptastic cloud saving Ubisoft uses. It worked fine up until I got to a flashback mission and now it has a tendency to reset my progress to that point.
You shouldn't have an issue as long as you avoid playing when you get that message or stick to one method of saving (though this somehow screwed me still).
Alright game. Horrible Splinter Cell game. You are better off playing the masterpieces of Splinter Cell, Pandora Tomorrow, and Chaos Theory. Also play Double Agent on Generation 6 consoles (PS2, Xbox, GC). Once you play those, you will understand why people HATE!!!! Double Agent Gen 7 and Convicition.ShadowDeathX
couldn't have said it better myself.
ubisoft perfected the stealth game genre with chaos theory and then inexplicably tore it all apart with double agent and conviction. tc, if you haven't played chaos theory do so NOW!
SP is okay...Co-op is awesome...multiplayer is HORRIBLE! BRING BACK SPIES AND MERCS....sorry that was a sore spot for me...Croag821Spies&Mercenaries was such a unique awesome gameplay shame they removed it.

Yeah I didn't play much of the earlier titles, but I did try some Spies vs Mercenaries. They really need to bring that back for Blacklist.
Whenever a franchise tries to go in a different direction it's greeted with hate. Doesn't mean in it's a bad game or makes the franchise worse. If you like Splinter Cell there's a fair chance you'll enjoy it.
The interesting thing in this debate is that the "haters" are in a clear minority and without the succes of Conviction, it would be the end of the series. Double agent was the worst selling game of the series and didn´t even reach 1mill in total sales. Conviction sold close to 3mill in total.Whenever a franchise tries to go in a different direction it's greeted with hate. Doesn't mean in it's a bad game or makes the franchise worse. Conviction is worth the price for the co-op alone. The co-op mission is probably the best 2 player game I've ever played with a friend.bonafidetk
Or at least it would be if it wasn't so problematic trying to find games online for so many people. But then again, I only have issues because I'm currently overseas, but dammit I should not be told by support that I HAVE to forward my ports just to play with a friend.
Conviction is like a one trick pony with mark and execute. The game is caked in excessive foul language unlike other splinter cells not to mention that the npc's sound the same.
A poor splinter cell game indeed, glad I only paid £3.75 for it. Chaos theory destroys it.
