So what are people's thoughts on the prospect that Spore's online component may not be free of charge?

Is sporepedia a subscription thing? I still wouldn't actually PAY for user created content though, I mean, stuff is gonna be made constantly when that game comes out, putting a fee on that would make the game go from "over-hyped and anticipated" to "Un-heard of".

Now if it's like, just more stuff to expand on the game (like Bethesda's DLC that they made for Oblivion, like the special weapons and horse armor.) then it makes more sense.

Anyway, my vote goes to No because there shouldn't be a price on Sporepedia.

Spore is completely online since you are sharing content with others users. Everything you create can be seen by other people. You can tag other people to track what they are creating. It has been compared to Myspace and other such networks. There is also talk about a spore home page etc, you have to listen to that interview with Wright to hear all the details.

I don't mind playing Spore without the online stuff... I.e. I'm sure I won't even notice if this weird creature is computer-generated or from another player's mind.

Its rather ironic that we have known about this game for so long, a few years now, and yet we all know so little about it.

This is NOT what I consider online at all and nothing I would pay a subscription fee for. The next thing that will happen, is that we are to pay for user created mods and whatnot. It's a singleplayer game and its few online features, without even involving the ability to interact with other real players in the game, doesn't make this an online game at all. No subscription fee should even be considered. I hope they better damn well change their mind, or there will be some angry gamers I'm sure.

Biggest_loser do you have a link for us? I haven't heard of any subcription fees and I doubt they would implement one. Will Wright's latest interview even mentioned him saying that they are considering making the game free for everyone :?

I would still buy it, but I wouldn't utilise the online functions that come with the fee.
The whole fee thing goes against what Will Wright wanted to do in the first place, but we'll see.

ahh I see, I'm guessing that it will feature microtransactions. That was something they were talking about doing, I strongly doubt pc gamers are going to pay a subscription for what Spore offers.

What is a microtransaction?

paying for small items and addiontal stuff online. It would be the same as all those Sims Expansions, but all the additional stuff would be purchasable online.

all what was said was spore would a source of "expanded digital revenue stream". i really don't what it mean, but as long as its just microtransaction (will wright said that the game has been designed to support microstransactions and expansion packs) no charge for user generated content i have no problem

That depends on the price. If we're talking about something like $5 per month, then they can forget it, if it's more like $5 per year, then I might consider it

If they charge for Sporepedia we'll see sites springing up all over the place to offer free content. We'll probably see other sites anyway.

no, the whole WW keeps on referring to sporipedia, spocasts, and myspore, as another myspace, and such, if those are free, it should be free too.

Also, if at least one third of the hype is the user created content, and sporipedia, but you have to pay for, that would take away alot of people, if forced to subscribe to get access

but is EA goes ahead and starts to sell superficial (individual DLC) things like ax body spray billboards, heads premade in the shape of batman and flaming skins, and such. Ill let the people to buy those things to do it, not me.

That, I think, would be acceptable. Altough I would much rather have a big package of extra content in the form of Expansion Packs. But we'll see what will happen later this year!

It's EA games so they'll milk the game in some way, probably by releasing loads of expansion packs just like Sims and Sims2.

I dont see how they can make expansion packs for this game though, sure they can make more skins arms/legs etc, but they should be in the game in the first place, I hate expansion packs with feck all in them ala Sims2. I also hate the way developers are eyeing the subscription model even if there game is not an MMO.

Seriously don't EA make enough billions as it is? If it has any fee at all, im not buying it.

funny thing - " Spore has been designed from the outset to accommodate expansion packs, booster packs and microtransactions"

Games should either cost what you pay in the shops, or be entirely subscription fee based.

As soon as you try to create a game that is a bit of both you just end up pissing most people off. Those who don't get the subscription complain that they are being sold an incomplete game, and those that do pay the subscription complain that they don't get many updates, or that the updates aren't worth what they are paying.

Considering EA's track record at supporting games after launch - being almost non-existent even when games are severly broken at launch, and in the case of sports titles having their online side permanently disabled after 18 months - how long do you think they would continue to create new content for it, and support it?

I like your idea about other sites hosting the content!

Surely they won't charge us for Sporepedia.

It also has to be taken into consideration that many who play the game might not even have a credit card...

Its rather ironic that we have known about this game for so long, a few years now, and yet we all know so little about it.

I think that's because they've changed devs a few times or at least added to the team inorder to make changes.

Are there any links pointing to charges for the online content? That doesn't work too well on the PC side of things, I can see all the consoles getting charged though :)

Well that's disheartening :?

Though it's rather stark on the details. I wonder how it would even work, there's basically 2 online elements. One is the database you can connect to so you can download user created content. The other is obviously multiplayer and they way they make gameplay sound it's almost like an MMO.

Multiplayer? As strange as it may sound has that actually been confirmed?

Like what would there be in that? Construct cities together? War of some sort?

Don't be too disheartened because its speculation - also can you make a Spore mega thread perhaps? There are quite a few topics emerging..

if they charge a typical MMO type fee to keep playing then I won't be playing it. But I doubt they'd do that, more than likely you'll just pay for extra content on the micro level.

lol your killing me, I'm going to have to go back and read all the stories about this game :P

MP was suppose to be you taking your creation from nothing and moving up the food chain while other players (human) were out and about in the galaxy. No?

I don't have time to make a mega thread as I'm already behind on update a few of mine already. If you want to put the time into dispelling some of the rumors as well as outlining the facts I'll be happy to move a current sticky for a Spore sticky :)
