6 days before Spore will even be out and it is widely available for download. at one site over 50k people downloading on a single torrent(with 10k seeders). i will not post what these sites are or whether i approve of it. But i ask you this, did the Extremely over the top Anti-Piracy methods put in spore have anything to do with what is happening now?

Why was it over the top? most of the content requires online anyway right?

No, no ammount of security warrants stealing. its obsurd to even think so, even if it is an inconviniance to the consumer. Which doesnt seem to matter with this games case because the online warrants the purchase, I would imagine it being rather bland without it.

Spore was highly anticipated thats why there are so many people pumping that. I don't think that it will ever be possible to stop piracy and this is shown with spore.

No but I see the OP's point, they probably spent a ton on the system they used only to have it end up available for download. I'm not saying piracy is a good thing, or even that it's acceptable, but I wonder if they realize that some pirates get their kicks from doing things like this. If you don't put protection on a game, I'm sure the company would end up making more in the long run, as I've had more than my share of games messed up by overcomplicated "security" systems...

I think they went overboard with the 3 activations that won't get refunded if you uninstall the game. (Same as Mass Effect).

In my case, I didn't play/buy MassEffect, and won't buy/play Spore either.... until they remove that activation scheme from their security. I don't mind the rest (DVD check, check when downloading new content etc), just the 3 activations limit.

Anyways, hope it succeeds for Will Wright, but I also hope they remove that (insert your own comment here) activation scheme!

A lot of the people who downloaded the game before hand will end up buying it. Some people just need a taste to see if the game is worth buying so they aren't supporting a game they hate.

A) spore has no activation system like Mass Effect B) there is no online multiplayer so the only thing online that really matters is being able to share creatures. And no i dont think EA had anything to do with the ammount of people downloading, i think it has to do with the word of mouth everyone is giving to it. Heck if people dont talk about it people generally dont find out about it as fast. When you post something like this many people research and intern start doing it themselves .... dont tell me its not true because I used to do it and the way i found out about it was through someone complaining about it. Sometimes it takes peopple a long time to realize the only way to conitnue FUNDING game creation is if the consumer BUYs the game not downloads it for free.... i realized that i wish others would... Stop giving this so much spotlight because it just makes people more aware of it.

I can imagine all those in favour of yes are sittin there with thier downloaded version.PC360Wii

I voted yes, even though my Spore pre order was shipped today.

While many of these people will be those who pirate anyway, a percentage of them will be people who would have purchased the game; but are avoiding the draconian copy protection.

There are many alternative options EA could have used as opposed to three install limit Securom, they chose the worse option and are now getting the backlash.

I'm getting the game even if it has this horrible copy protection, I'm a PC gamer and will support my platform; even in the hard times. I do have my limits on what I am willing to put up with, but I will never pirate a game.

So if you DL a cracked one, and got a real cd key, you can avoid the installation limits? but still go online? That doesnt sound bad, but still, if these didnt exist, then Piracy wouldnt be a problem, wether or not its better for the minority of legal downloaders, it doesnt outweigh the bad imo.

What about people in considerably poorer countries, in which a single game can cost upward to a months paycheck. Not to mention the fact that in these countries, no one cares whether these people crack a game or not because their is no law in that country about DRM.

Well, people in third world countries generally steal just to get by if they're really poor. I don't think they should be worrying too much about video games.

I voted no, because the people who downloaded the pirated game did it because they are used to getting most of their games free and wouldn't want to pay a full $50 for a game that may completly suck. I'm sure all new relases have thousands of pirated downloads, Spore just may seem to have more because of its popularity atm.

Three installations limit = FAIL.

I won't be renting.. I mean "buying" the game because of that and I know I'm not the only one. I'm not saying I will pirate it, I just won't play it. Just like Bioshock and Mass Effect.

Copy protection should never be anything more than a simple cd/dvd-check or a cd-key if the game has multiplayer.

A) spore has no activation system like Mass Effect ColdfireTrilogy

A) Then why does everyone think it does? Why isn't EA correcting that idea on the Spore forums? It has limited activations, EA has flat out said that they will be using the same DRM they used in Mass Effect going forward. Not much room to wiggle there. And, as I said, if they aren't, they are sure doing a lousy job communicating that to the masses of fans on their own forums. Hell, I'm considering downloading a torrent, even though I have no intention of installing any illegal copies of this game, ever. Just to show my contempt and disgust at EA. Sort of like flipping them the bird.

Not only that the analogy was false from the very beginning. Buying any type of software is buying a copy of it. It all starts from one source - intellectual property, the creators like you said. So dling a copy for free is stealing.

No... many games without any copy protection at all still appear on these p2p sites. It's not likely to matter much as this is going to be another cash cow for many years.

It's difficult to have much sympathy for a company as wealthy as EA, but had this been a smaller company trying to recoup the loans it had taken out to develop a game it would have been tragic.

Oh man...did they get what they deserve? Are you serious? The reason they even have it is because idiot thieves are getting their product that they have worked on for years for free! Only a moron could say they deserve it for trying to make a profit off of their hard work. You pirates make me want to vomit!! You are part of the reason the devs don't want to make pc exclusive games and then you turn around and cry about games being "consolized". What a bunch of losers....

I didn't realize how draconian the install limit was for ME until after I bought it.

I mean even the Bioshock install limit was dropped...

I will never....ever ...ever ...buy a game with install limits again ! Ever...!!!

Well.. couple things: a) Spore was released, honest-to-God-retail, two days ago in Australia. b) It's still not reliably cracked yet. Again, this is somehow doing a heck of a lot better than the traditional Safedisc/SecuROM stuff, though I'm really not sure how.

you guys both missed the real answer for how those games in particular pull it off. they're extremely multiplayer-centric games. when you pirate it, you miss out on battle.net or the main ranked servers. with online games, they can for the most part control access of pirated versions via the master server.

Exactly, and anyway there are a ton of cracked servers out there. It is very easy to play battlefield online without paying for it.

All those people downloading the game are not only contributing to the slow death of PC gaming, but are the people that stand up and cry when console only games (like Gears of War2) are made. You make your bed, you have to sleep in it.

there are cracked servers for WoW too along with VPN LAN play, but the main thing is that most people would rather play on the official ones. :) games with a heavy MP component sell much, much better to hardcore gamers than a primarily SP experience.

Well said!! Funny how the same people crying about games being consolized and there being a lack of exclusives for pc are the very reason it's happening. Just look at the results of this poll...almost 50/50...no wonder pc gaming is hurting the way it is and the devs keep saying that they will make no more pc exclusives. Bunch of morons...killing your own platform.

what they deserved? you mean consumers are justified to steal a merchandise whenever they are frustrated, even when the producers are merely trying to protect their own rights? if anything, this outrageous situation just goes to show that EA's copy protection is NOT enough to stop the pirates at bay.

behind every "yes" vote in this poll is a twisted logic that tries to put oneself above common sense and responsibilities -- consumerism at its worst. looking at this thread really makes me wonder: perhaps the "pc gaming is dead" statement isn't all bs afterall.

As many of you stated it does not matter. Because, the game would be pirated just like any other game out there. All the games gets pirated so is Spore. So I assume thats a "no they dont deserve it" .

But, if it is to be pirated , why the (________) protection ?

They do deserve it IMO, because of mistreating us PC gamers... The people who pirate will continue, the people who buy will continue to do so. Of course with some exceptions, but not to bankrupt the publisher.

This was one game that I wanted to try. Prior to reading this I didnt know there were all kinds of protections on the game to bother me. So I will simply pass on this one. There will be other great games coming out by the end of the year. Glad this helped me decide wheter to get it or no.

[QUOTE="PC360Wii"]I can imagine all those in favour of yes are sittin there with thier downloaded version.AnnoyedDragon

I have had spore for 4 days now and even I've resorted to the pirated version just to get away from the DRM.

People have generally pirated this game (some not most) to get away from the securerom, that thing is a nightmare to get rid of once on your computer and once it starts freaking out your system you may as well format.

EA could have made there own security for this title and many others but they choose one most people hate and now they are saying the results.

And you don't need to pirate the game, theres a work around already out for the legit version to get around the DRM.

(_________) protection is not designed and implemented to stop pirates (hackers and leechers), but to prevent legit customers from loaning their copies of the game to other people.

Im waiting for the idiotic bigwigs to realise that.

Well, not entirely - it might prevent me from lending the game to my friends (which I frequently do), so it prevents some piracy (but not much).

Even so, piracy is never justified, and EA/Will Wright deserve better.

Well that is true too. But then again, all this protection crap exists for one primary purpose which is to try and stop piracy. I do not think that try to stop you to lend your game to your friend is their primary purpose.

Also, dont quote me on this, but IMO, they will lose more money with all the people frustated with their protection systems then if someone lend game to his/her friend.

But I just dont consider lending games to friends as stealing or piracy. I remember when I was in junior high, me and a couple of friends traded games for a few weeks because we did not have the money to get a copy.
