Even with SATAII SSD's are substantially faster than HDD... go for it. I highly recommend them.

  • Crucial M4 128GB
  • Samsung Desktop 830 128GB
  • Corsair Force Series 3 120GB
  • Intel 330 120GB

After several hours you will begin to wonder why you didn't do it a long time ago. All of these are backwards compatible to SATAII so you have no compatibility issues.

If you have the extra money yes. I have a sandisk 120 gb. 30 sec boots, quick shutdowns, programs opening instantly. That makes it worth it and thats from a lower end ssd. The only real problem is how fast the price is dropping. I bought mine in dec for 120, now they are selling for 90.

Hey i have a i7 950 with a DX580G , similiar Motherboard,

I'm using a Corsair Force 3 As my SSD for OS, takes about 10 Seconds to windows to load and once its logged in it takes about 5 seconds to start all apps

There pretty good and make load times faster. you can use the old HDD for games storage. since theres nothing more than games there all of my games load quickly now

Keep this in mind, if you put your computer into sleep mode instead of turning it off it boots up under 2 seconds meaning it will boot up faster than any SSD drive money can buy and uses 2-3w while in sleep mode. Keep in mind it uses 1w when actually off. Meaning power wise your only saving 2-3w having it off. It can also be put to sleep doing anything, I had mine running prim95 and put it to sleep and woke it back up and it started back right where it left off without failing to test. Same could be done even while in a game.

Make sure to disable hybride sleep in windows if you do this and your computer supports S3.

Simply set your computer to go to sleep every 10min and you've got the best boot times and energy saving plan since in theory its in sleep mode more than you actually leave it idling for hours saving you a LOT more W making the difference between turning it off and not usless.

This means SSD drives become usless for the OS unless you plan on actually turning your computer off. This means you should just use it for your games and raid 2 normal drives for OS and backup. Sure the SSD might be faster but it's very unlikely you'll notice it unless your doing benchmarks... But for games it's a whole different story.

not really, its a quality of life thing. sure you can use the sleep function, but when your installing drivers and have to restart windows 2 or 3 times for example, its very handy. likewise for any trouble shooting. and you ignore that every program loads soo much faster, again it just makes the quality of your experience better. also you never have to hear thrashing hard drives. this was driving me mad with the WD black.

and lol a pc doesnt use 1 watt when its turned off. it uses nothing, the date and time is maintained by a motherboard battery.

Your saying my PC when off uses 1w... but when sleeping it uses 2-3w? My whole PC???

I know I notice when I open multiple tabs in firefow or chrome... SSD is so much faster loading them all.

Thats the advantage off and SSD even if its a crappy one. Apps open instantly

You can argue that for just boot times its not worth it, and well 30 sec boot times are nice, its the every day use that makes it worth it.

The only reason it's doing this is because the cach for them is saved on the HDD meaning it has to read from it to load the page faster. If you however go to a page you've never gone to before it's no different HDD vs SSD. However you can also use ur RAM as a SSD which is 100X+ faster than a SSD for browsing. I've done this and haven't noticed a real difference so it might all be in your head....

1W off 3-5w sleep mode whole PC. 2 seconds to power on.

Well, I've never tried SSDs, so I'm not the best person to judge, but my computer already takes about 20 seconds to boot. Data transfer would certainly be faster, but that doesn't bother me at all. My HDD makes very little noise, especially after turning off the dreadful windows 7 search indexer (I can still search, but indexes aren't constantly being verified). To disable it, go to your task manager - services, scroll down to WSearch, right click and choose "stop service". You can also disable the automatic restore point creation in the task scheduler, but remember to sometimes make some restore points.

Also, I've heard that some SSDs can make some sort of whining noise.

Edit: you will also definitely want to disable WinSAT in the windows - maintenance subfolder in the task scheduler, it tests your computer's hardware capabilities every month to update your windows performance index.

Hmmm, nice to know it's that low.

But, there's also another thing... I'm using water cooling, I'm sure that adds to extra wattage.

Some people have some overcloking done... which is another thing.

And a I swear when opening multiple tabs or even my computer, it's way faster with SSD. It makes sense since acces time are so low with SSD.

you are wrong again. do you just completely guess or something? ssd's use hdd's as caching drives? bullsh!t. ssd's dont depend on any other drive to function. putting a hard drive into the equation so the hard drive has to spin up to feed info to the ssd would slow the process down completely, not speed it up. the whole reason the ssd is faster is because of no moving parts, so why would ssd's use HDD's to cache for them???? i think you are seriously confused between ssd's and hybrid drives. and a pc does not use 1 watt when its turned off, it uses the motherboard battery to maintain date and time so you can unplug it with no issues.
