In the wake of the release of the new stalker game i decided to get the first one and see what all the fuss was about. I started playing it it and am about 1 1/2 hours in. Im as undecided as i have ever been about a game. I cant really tell if i like it but i know to like ill have to invest much more time into it. What i need is for someone to give me the shakedown of what makes this game great and what to expect later on in the game. yep i need some spoilers just get me hyped of whats to come cause otherwise i can see this game gathering dust.

Have you tried posting this on the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. board ? It is still pretty active and may yield a better result than the general PC forum. I would help you but I have only played S.T.A.L.K.E.R. for 7 hours and haven't gotten far enough to really help you out.

The atmosphere is the best part about this game. I would give the game a few more hours before It really starts to pick up.

the really 'do whatever you want' aspect and the 'however i want to' aspect is really nice. you can go in really sneaky, or you can go in full force, however you want to do it. the atmosphere is the best part of the game. you can literally sit there and just look around and be amazed. You can go explore, you can be a good guy or a bad guy, IDK its just fun appealing and different.

To tell u the truth, i didnt like the game at first, took me a week to beat it, had a hard time staying with the game, but in the end i really got into it, and then realized how great of a game it was, now, ive seen the movie, bought the book, and play the game still (got the game over half a year ago) and planning on preordering clearskys soon.

yeah, this atmosphere people talk about, i don't really get that , i mean it might be because the gfx are a bit dated but they are still good. Never really been bored and interested in a game at the same time. Any highlights (epic moments) anyome can reveal ?

You've been playing it for an hour and you need people to tell you what you should like about it?

If its not your thing you don't have to feel ashamed in not liking it!

Well the thing is that i think i do like it but if it keeps on the way its going then i will get bored with it, and because i do not have much time i like to invest the little i have in a worthwhile experiance. And im not asking what i should like about it im asking if there is anything to look forward to and / or if there is change of pace. I kinda just need some motivation to stick with it thats all.

Just play the game more. If you don't enjoy an open-roaming realistic FPS with RPG elements then there's nothing that this game can do for you. It's a killer game.

I think you might be right, there might be a certain degree of shame. It's strange when lots of people tell you to check out this great game that you will love and once you do you don't really feel the same vibe. It kinda makes you feel like your missing out or not getting it.

Not everyone "gets" this game their first time playing it. The best games can be the hardest ones to get into. When I first played Stalker, I didn't like it too much. But then I just thought about how great the game concept is, tried it again, and played endlessly.

Another question, do you think it be wise to start off with clear sky, i hear it's a sequel-prequel, and if that goes down better to work through the first one ?

if i hadn't already played STALKER, i might be tempted to do that, because i find the whole prequel business a bit of a bore - much better to go forwards than backwards - but if you've already got the game and started it, maybe it's better to press on.

On which note, you do need to stick with it, it gets much more intense later on, the early parts are about letting you immerse yourself in that world and getting the feel of it

it's a great game, one of the very best i've played

The graphics arent really that dated, it still has some of the best lighting and textures ive seen

I have no graphics enhancing mods BTW
