SC2 single player is hella fun, the MP (I've only played 1vs1) can be hard but enjoyable. The only hard thing about MP in SC2 is sometimes you'll be up against people with smurf accounts (alt accounts of high lvl players) who just enjoy pwning noobs. When you get a few wins under your belt in MP it feels very good compared to other RTS games.
Also there's a lot of different maps/modes you can try in MP, there's a dota/moba style SC2 map, tower defense SC2 map and lots of other different kinds of maps. I think someone even made a RPG SC2 style map.
If you do play MP and actually want to advance in league, I would pick a race (I love protoss, but I play terran in MP since they have easier builds) stick with it, look up some builds from pro players on youtube and enjoy.
If you like playing single player, SC2 has a fun campaign, and plenty of custom match options for playing against AI, with a wide range of difficulty levels. And playing online isn't as hard as some people make it out to be. I used to always be terrible at RTSs online, and SC2 is the only one I've ever managed to get a decent win/loss record with. It's because of the league system. You play 5 placement matches that battlenet uses to track how good you are (and if you're not an experienced online RTS player, you'll probably get your ass kicked in most, if not all of your placement matches), then you get put into a league, and, in my experience, they've done a very good job of player matching. Like I said, I'm pretty bad at competitive RTSs, and when I started SC2 online, I lost all 5 of my placement matches. Got put in the bronze league, and then actually had a near perfect 50/50 record a few dozen matches in. Sure, bronze league matches aren't as intense as some of the replays you can find of the better players, but it's great for people who aren't real good, because you don't just get frustrated, getting dominated constantly.
Plus, getting matched with other players that you can actually beat helps you get better at the game, too. When I started playing SC2 online, it was the only RTS I'd ever played multiplayer where I even stood a chance online, and after playing it for a few months, I was definitely way better at it than when I started, too. And better at RTS games, in general.
