I have tried SWG in the past but i never got too far, was on tatooine somewhere killing tusken raiders and such, this was pre - New Game Experience. I gave the new trial a try and it's pretty sweet. Only problem i have is there seems to be some horrible lag on the city of tattooine, and outside as well. I don't know if there's some options i need to turn down or whatnot...it seems like my PC should be able to handle it.

Or should i just get LOTRO? I stopped playing WoW a few months back, been playing it on and off for a few years now and i finally decided to buy a new MMORPG.

My PC is:

Intel Pentium 4 3.4GHz

1G Ram

Geforce 6800 Ultra

Would it even be able to run LOTRO decently?

Everyone will agree with me guaranteed that SWG is the best MMO ever, especially after they fixed it, and you should definitely get that and not even read any other posts in this thread and just go buy it and play it forever.

Don't listen to Dracunos. SWG is pretty much dead now, thanks to how they ruined everything with their last update, so far as I know. However, if you tried it again recently and liked what you played, then ummm go for it. The more power to you, I guess. You could run LOTRO if you wanted to play it. It's a descent fantasy MMORPG, especially since it's from Turbine. Honestly, it's the first good game they have produced since Asherons Call 1. LOTRO's script isn't to good though. It's chocked full of dialect and you can barely understand what you are reading half the time, but other than that it's pretty good. For honest answers though, I suggest you ask this question in www.mmorpg.com's forums, since they are all addicts over there and can give you the in's and out's of each title, as well as why or why not they are worth playing.

SWG sucks after they "fixed it". It's lifeless and dead with gameplay and sony don't give a crap.

Your computer should beable to run LOTR quiet well. When you get it just change a few settings around to get it running smooth but you will still able to have it on high mostly.

Get Lord of the Ring Online, your at least guaranteed good content and expansion packs that go to into Two Towers and Return of the King.  SWG is nothing more than a sinking ship that is being kept afloat by the few devoted hardcore fans that hope it will good again or until the next Star Wars MMO comes out.  Trust me if it didn't have Star Wars in the title, it would have gone the way of Asheron's Call 2.

It was terrible when they "fixed" it, practically everyone left; the game is crap now. blame SOE.

im a bounty hunter in SWG... bounty hunting is all i do, its something unique in a MMO, and is the only MMO that i know of that has bounty hunting... until another MMO comes out with a bounty hunting system... im staying with SWG

Depends,

1) Do you want to grind in a universe of Star Wars?

or

2) Do you want to grind in the universe of Middle-Earth?

Your pick on where you want to waste your life.

If you enjoyed WoW for several years you'll also enjoy LOTR. Although you'll find much of the same, it's not as drastic of a difference as playing SWG will be. SWG is what I consider first generation MMO, in the same league as EQ1, DAOC, Earth and Beyond (defunct) and to some extents Eve Online. The interface is archaic, simple things such as finding groups and selling items aren't well implemented, and it's much more of a grind than a pick up and play experience. You will be stepping backwards in the MMO evolutionary chain by trying out SWG after you've spent a good amount of time in WoW.

See my review of the old school SWG somewhere in Gamespot, but the bottom line for me is that if it didn't have the Star Wars license and was instead set in some generic sci fi setting it wouldn't have lasted 6 months because the game itself wasn't that compelling. Also your comment of lag in certain cities has perpetually been a problem, among other things. I'm not suprised at all to hear someone say they had lag or frame rate issues on a game engine that's years old, especially if their system already plays WoW just fine.

There are tons of simply broken quests and skills, strange lag situations in seemingly empty areas, and other bugs that have literally been in place for years. I remember having a GM ticket unresolved after 4 weeks, and it was a simple bug. There is definitely a sense of both finality and indifference from the SWG community as to the future of their game world, much like I saw in the last 6 months of Earth and Beyond.

LOTRO is very similiar to WoW, which means you'll be able to pick up and play it without learning a ton of new things. It's fresh and the graphics are good and it's not over populated yet, and they got many aspects of Tolkien really spot on. It's not exaclty better than Wow, just different, but still very fun for casual players. Seeing as my 70 druid and WoW guild is struggling through Gruul's lair ATM, it's nice to load up LOTRO and have that same wide eyed questing fun time that I remember back in 2005 with WoW.

Great reply :) You've prettty much summed it up for me. I like both the Star Wars universe and the Lord of the Rings world as well. Seeing as how i stopped playing WoW after such a long time, the futuristic SWG universe seemed like a good, refreshing choice. However, if it's not the buggy and poorly optimized world that causes that lag that kills it for me, it's just the game itself, it's definitely showing it's age. The gunfire is very poor and skippy, animations are pretty bad, especially when you kill enemies. It has it's moments, and there does seem to be a decent amount of things you can do, especially with space combat and all that, but i'm just not sure if it's enough and if i would want to go through all that in the game's current state. I thought it was a pretty decent game from the trial, but i can already see how i would maybe get tired of it after a while. With LOTRO, it's just the gameplay experience i need to match that of WoW's, i just wish there was some way to try the game first. It seems like a pretty safe bet but i wouldn't mind giving it a shot first.

Star Wars Galaxies was killed after they did the first Combat Upgrade. It was more like a downgrade if you ask me. I loved the game and played it for a long time even after they did the second Combat Upgrade but the game has just lost that thing that made it fun.

Lord of the Rings Online on the other hand is a lot of fun. I liked the game so much in beta that I pre-ordered it and purchased the lifetime membership.

Anything, but not SWG. SOE ruined it.
