I wouldn't go with that art style, but it seems fine i guess. It's an MMO after all, needs to be more accessible.

I don't mind seriously. If you look at the scale of the game you can imagine what flawless experience would we get if it had Crysis-like graphics.

The art style will help the game to look good after several years of aging. Also it will probably have an easier time running on lower end pcs.

Bioware are future proofing their game the same way Blizzard did with WoW. Stylised graphics.

I disagree, the art style has only helped the game look bad before it has even come out.

Opinions vary of course, I have no problem with that. I just can't get past it looking like a cartoon to me. I admit I tend to enjoy more realistic settings personally, such as Conan as someone brought up.

I don't really mind, I couldn't care less about the graphics, since the main focus of SWTOR is story.

Cartoony is the way to go for a game that is supposed to last for 5+ years. Galaxies looks terrible, it has not aged well at all, whereas WoW can still look quite good. Its a simple fact that realistic graphics age faster than a cartoony artstyle.

I cant get excited either, it looks like World of Warcraft with Biowares little twist, its combat looks as avarage as does its character advancement system. Its criminal that this MMO is getting more hype than Guild Wars 2 AND Final FAntasy 14.... 2 games that actually are stepping out of a safety net beyond "Oh look at me, everything in my game is voice acted".

Which will eventually fail cause the devs will probably add a "new" Hero system! Hopefully they don't though, cause I'm looking forward to it!

Ha -

Here come the Bioware fanatics, making excuses for a company that seriously needs to get their act together, or just go away.

'

Literally thousands of fans of this corporation, (on various message boards), were calling Dragon Age "amazing", before any screenshots or gameplay details were even known.
After the game was released, the mantra of "amazing" was still being chanted, while flaws like muddy textures were dismissed with phrases like - "Bioware wanted to make it with muddy textures - it was a brilliant design choice"

Now we have people saying that the bad graphics of The Old Republic - are "stylized", and will "future proof" the game.

-

This is ridiculous.

This, MMO's need to be able to run on low spec PCs in order to increase their userbase and make it more accessible.

The graphics style they used, would seem to run better on all systems as opposed to people expecting single player games (graphics) on an mmo.

Smooth looking cartoon graphics require lower specs than smooth looking realistic graphics. No MMO with awesomely realistic graphics has ever succeeded, simply because a majority of gamers can't run the games.

Yeah thats the only thing that bothers me about this game. Its using the crappy "clone wars era" art style from the awful animated movie and cartoon series.

Also the graphics are meh at best, which is sad considering this game doesn't even come out for another year or more. It looks outdated now, imagine when it comes out. or a few years after that, when people are playing it and they are making expansions for it.... :(

Not this, you can have a game run fine on lower specs without the over the top cartoony look or motion captured animations. The graphics really should have fit the realm and honestly this just doesn't really fit the Star Wars atmosphere we've seen from the original movies and their better novels and games. Their visual presentations have been giving me a vibe that relates closer to Lego Star Wars then the JK and KoToR series. WoW works great for WoW but I don't see overly bright colors, over sized weapons, gigantic armor, and blocky character models meshing well with a universe that at one point took itself rather seriously. But if it works for the majority of you folks out there who am I to argue.

I don't particularly like the artstyle which i felt is too cartoonish but thats just a subjective opinion. What I can complain somewhat is that the animation felt a little too clunky and rough. Yes, the game is still in development but I think right now, they've moved past animation and probably concentrating on smoothing out server issues, bugs, balancing and adding quests and content.

vfibsux

and add to that, the lack of gameplay - if you want too feel like a jedi play jedi academy, at least there your allowed to jump and aim for yourself

It's going to be so much found being a "super athlete" who can't even jump, forget wall running etc, standing there in a fight watching your light saber penetrate some npc in locked combat and watch the script go **miss**

LOL

first of all, kotor never "worked fine" - check this forum for help threads if you have any doubt

Second, I know people played those games, like you have people living off McD food - doesn't necessarily make it a good call now does it

Like I said, it's rpg, it will fail just like mxo, sto and swg did before it, for the simple reason you don't feel like a powerful fighter when your locked into 2D point and click gameplay, no wall jumping... no jumping at all, no aiming, no taunting

Really, all there is, is your usual run of the mill press t for next target, if your level is high enough you win if not you lose. There isn't actually any gameplay involved

SWG failed because SOE rolled out the NGE. Game was doing perfectly fine before that obomination caused about 90% of the playerbase to desert the game within a month or two. How does making an RPG mean it will fail. There is gameplay involved. Sounds to me like you are after more of an action game than what the RPGs typically involve.

No i don't care about the art style looks fine to me. Could they have made it better looking. Sure but that takes more away from content in the game which is what i'd rather was the main focus.

How does making an RPG mean it will fail.ocid1

Because RPG is 2D automation, where as being say a jedi or say neo in the matrix is the exact opposite. Action is the contrast to RPG

Think about it, as a kid playing a game? What is a game?

Let me answer that, playing is toying with creativity, now automation is the counter for dynanism so RPG is sort of anti-gaming.

What? That makes no sense at all. If you want to be like that then no game computer game is creative since you are bound by the rules the developers put down in front of you. Being an RPG does not mean it will fail. Plenty of RPGs out there do well. WoW, Eve, LotRO etc. If you want an action game play TFU or one of the JK games. Matrix Online failed because it was bollocks nothing more.

Let me break it down.

With automation, the outcome is stactic - the model used in RPGs; often refered to as "2D point and click"

With twitch, the outcome is dynamic - the model that should have been standard in all games, so far only 1 RPG had dynamic gameplay, can you guess which one?

And what does that mean? First of all, the result in RPGs is always predictable; you even have colors to tell what the script will roll for you.

Second, the automation is integrated into "combat", press t for next target and go put on some coffee

Summed up as anti-gaming. Because your not gaming - the script is overwriting everything and locking it down to an anti-creative singular process

I know this is ace pioneering stuff you can't find anywhere else on the net so I am not going to hate too much on you

Actually no i can't guess which RPG had dynamic gameplay. Which one is it? I wouldn't say the result of rpgs is always the same due to the variables in dice rolls. I wouldn't say twitch either should be the standard in all games not everyone wants that kind of thing in their games. I also don't agree with your anti-gaming statement either. D&D can be a hugely creative process you just need the person behind it to direct it the same with any game. Still you make a good arguement for your point of view i just can't agree with it. Out of curiosity what RPGs have you played and which do you consider failures?

The dynamic elements of RPGs such as clothing and class or appearance are usually great, this is true.

And yes almost every action game out there has zero character customization - why not let your player decide what he wants to look like on the battlfield? In that aspect RPGs are far superior.

And your point is certainly valid, some people do want a static game not at all based on personal skill or perception. 11 million playing wow right now

That being said, I'd never play a game that doesn't let me control my character.

Not

Kaelken

Thats funny, worked just fine in KotOR+KotOR 2.

LOL

first of all, kotor never "worked fine" - check this forum for help threads if you have any doubt

No thats just your narrow-minded opinion on this genre, considering MMORPGs are the most popular and most played genre in the world you should be willing to accept that you are wrong outside your own preference. Dont like it? got a play a shooter, coz pointing and clicking at someones head is gameplay yo!

There is a reason why RPG's controll like 99.9999% of the MMO market :P...

What? You dont belive me? Go out and try a "action" mmo... What is the first thing you will notice =)?

Kaelken

Fast food chains own 100 per cent of the american food production, take a look at america

Terrific logic there slick

Wow Completly ignoring the other part of the post...

Why do you think there are hardly any action games on the MMO market?

[QUOTE="KalDurenik"]

the art is so far one of the best in MMO's... Ok and before someone throw the "age of conan" card at me... I would rather have TOR graphic design then plastic design where it look like people have a stick up their... well you know...

Roland123_basic

wow... clearly never played AOC. the characters neither look plastic, nor stiff. all of the animations in AOC are motion captured for **** sake...

I agree age of conan looks fantastic even 2 years later it looks great and the dx10 update made it looks even better. And anyone who thinks AoC goes for a super realistic art style is crazy age of conan got a pretty stylized art style It would look just fine in 5 years it will be outdated no doubt but ugly looking? no only graphics whores would think this. We've reached a point in 3d graphics where games still looks decent even many years later a game like half-life 2 may be outdated graphically but it still look good today. The graphics of todays games will look outdated in the future but i doubt we will be calling games like crysis ugly in 5 years.

It's art style and graphics look much more consistent than Mass Effect's or Dragon Age's. It looks nice.
