I am a complete newbie when it comes to Starcraft, have never played the game before or even known anyone who plays it but I have my CE Starcraft 2 arriving today. The question I want to ask is...

Should I jump straight into playing SC2 or play SC first and then start playing SC2?

Any and all advice is appreciated! :)

Well, considering that SC2 does a great job of explaining everything that happened in sc1 during the installantion I do not think SC1 is really NEEDED as such.

It is still a fairly good game, but I think I would play SC2 right here and now, and if you then at a later date have to travel, pack sc1, since it can pretty much run on any laptop :) Fun to see how the things really playied out, instead of hearing about it, but it is not really needed.

it is up to you ofcourse :) I know some people who bought the CE, and started with SC1 ^^

You need to play Starcraft first, IMO.

Starcraft is already too old, you missed the chance imo :P but if you can stand the outdated graphics when something like SC 2 is already released then get it, but you can find the story on wiki, an even more detailed story on the dedicated starcraft wiki page.

You dont need to play SC1 first, the story of SC1 is narrated to you while installing SC2. But SC1 its still worth playing if you havent already and if you have both SC1 and SC2 it would be better to play SC1 first for obvious reasons.

Play SC1 first.

The explanation SC2's installation gives of the first one's story is skeletal. You probably would not understand some things. Although this will not be so evident in WoL, it will become evident once more of the story, especially the branches regarding the protoss tribes, unfolds.

Stick to SC 2. Nostalgia clouds people's judgment. If you find yourself really liking SC 2 go back to SC 1 to get the details of the story through.

I would just go for SC2. As others said, the main story gets told to you while the game installs. SC1 is a classic and all but really dated. SC2 does a great job with the difficulty curve of being very accessibly for new players. Might seem backwards, but I'd do SC2 and then go back to SC1 later if you have the time or interest.

Go with Starcraft 2. You will pretty much learn everything from there.

If you've played any relatively modern RTS you won't find Starcraft fun, it's extremely dated at first sight and it takes a while to get used to. I would suggest that you start with SC2, and if it really intrigues you play through SC1.

Not critical to play StarCraft first imo. The story isn't very good to be honest, so it won't exactly be ruining your whole gaming experience.

You should play Starcraft 1 first, but Starcraft 2 explains the story of the first game in the booklet and when it's installing.

To be honest SC1 is a huge grindfest of destroying all enemy units. The newest installation gets rid of that and makes every mission vary. I had never beaten brood war so I went back and finished that (sometimes with cheats because of the grind). I'd say use cheats and power through SC1 + expansion asap, and then play SC2 normally. You can find the battlechest for $3 on g2cdkey so i'd say its worth it as long as you have ~20 hours to spare on a story

It is NOT worth it to spend a full ~70 hours or probably more grinding through the ~30 original missions and the ~30 brood war missions when you could be playing SC2 instead.

The main difference I see with Starcraft 1 and 2 is the adventure game elements, and the creative campaign missions. The basics of Starcraft and Starcraft 2 are very very similar. The way you build up your economy and base, along with unit tactics are extremely similar. The graphics for Starcraft 2 are not even that much better, considering that the games are 15 years apart.

Starcraft 1 holds up very well today, simply because it is so similar to Starcraft 2.

Do not listen to these idiots. Everything about the game is great - and people who think that the 'graphics are dated' have obviously been playing it for about half an hour, because the visuals mean nothing next to the gameplay which is, at this point, probably more evenly balanced than the sequel. If you play StarCraft for at least 20 hours you will gain experience over many gamers buy SCII who have no knowledge of the first game. You can bet they will be making this exact same argument about SCII in 10 years time.

Nobody will make such arguments in 10 years, because nobody is making such arguments about War 3 and Warcraft 3 was pretty decent looking for its time and unlike War 3, SC 2 has reached the better limit of 3D and it will always look good, because it has decent textures and high res support....

SC 1 is terribly outdated, fact and if he's playing for the story it would be faster and more efficient to just read it on wiki or w/e, it's not like the SC 1 story was even half as good as SC 2 and what does it being more balanced (after 10 years of patches) have to do with singleplayer? if he'd want to play it to learn a little about multiplayer then it's the worst choice he would make, because almost all are veterans and AI is horrible compared to SC 2 AI, SC 2 at least has matchmaking he would play with players of similar skill level or slightly better. Post made for the sake of throwing a few insults because people are dissing your precious game...

SC 1 is terribly outdatedDanielDust

"Outdated" is a very ambiguous term, and it has nothing to do with fun. The quality of the story and the campaign mission design has gone up considerably, but most other elements are very very similar. How can a game be "terribly outdated", when it is so similar to a game doing so well today?

The similarities prove that Starcraft: Brood War holds up very well to todays standards. I'm not saying anyone "has to" play Starcraft: Brood War before Starcraft 2. I'm not saying anybody has to do anything. What I am saying is that it would be beneficial and fun to play it first, and I recommend it. In contrast to people saying the game is not worth it because it is so outdated.

I played StarCraft 2 first and then watched the story unfold in Starcraft 1 on youtube. Almost nothing matters from that game in Starcraft 2. They give you a summary of events that happended and thats all you need.

However, I still would reccomend playing/watching the story unfold in StarCraft 1. Its still a good story, and it gets you more emotionally attached to the characters you meet in Starcraft 2. I would skip Brood War thoe, nothing in that game is important except maybe the protoss campaign.

No, its not my precious game - as Falconoffury pointed out, the word 'outdated' is a great generalisation to make. Outdated in what regard? Certainly in terms of technology, but does that cause the game to be less enjoyable in either SP or MP? How is the gameplay outdated? This is a highly subjective topic - sure, innovations have been made in RTS since 1998, but does that make StarCraft any less enjoyable - SP or MP? One thing is certain, 12 years later, StarCraft has just as much depth of skill as any other game on the market.

None of the stuff in the terran campaign was really all that important in brood war. Is the Earth decorative or whatever even mentioned in StarCraft 2? I found that whole story to be much less compelling compared to Jim Raynor's fight against this dominion.

Fenix? Did he do anything important in brood war? The best character to come out of brood War was Zeratul and thats basically it. None of the new characters from brood war are in StarCraft 2 because they all die or dissappear....

Massive SC/SC2 spoilers for those who still haven't seen the full story.

[spoiler]

True, the Terran campaign is completely irrelevant to SC2, the UED only gets mentioned in the mercenary Goliath profile if I recall correctly.

However, if you skip Brood War entirely, you'd still be at the point where Kerrigan is little more than a pet (except for Zeratul's explanation of the ancient prophecies during the mission where you have to wipe out all Dark Templars on Char, even that would make little sense without knowing what happened next), you wouldn't know how the hybrids storyline started, you wouldn't know what Zeratul is looking for on Ulaan or who does Kerrigan refer to with "Do you hear them, Zeratul? Whispering from the stars? The galaxy will burn with their coming".

Fenix's death plays a huge role in pushing Raynor to get close to Kerrigan again. It's the only reason he wants to deliver vengeance to her (although we'll have to wait until HotS to see any of this, **** you Blizzard for leaving us with such a huge cliffhanger!). You know the pistol he always keeps at his side? It is shown to have only one bullet in it, and he was saving it for her.

Graphics, because gameplay wise Starcraft 2 isn't an entirely new game. It's just a waste of time to play SC 1 if you're interested in the story (only detail that I remember was the artificial "Xel'Naga", because that was the best part, that's also what interests me most in SC 2, more Xel'Naga details) when SC 2 is such a great game and you can read the SC 1 story in less than half an hour (if it's extremely detailed filled with assumptions and speculations from fanatics), and for multiplayer, it's clearly not for new players, SC 2 on the other hand is perfect for new players, because of leagues and matchmaking.
