If I download something from Steam, can I only install it once or can I install it as many times as I want as long as I'm logged in?

And I was wondering how long a disk usually lives(if you don't scratch it).

You can download your games as much as you like.

Disks will outlive you if they're handled correctly.

About the disk, it depends on the person

You can also have it installed on as many different computers you want, as well as downloading it to those computers as many times as you want; the only thing they won't let you do is be logged in on multiple computers.

I wouldn't go as far to say that floppies and Zips would out live you. Especially seeing how both technologies use electro-magnetic forces to represent data. Like anything, those electro-magnetic fields will degrade and last depending on the environment but they are a lot more susceptible then CD/DVDs.

Right I should have said they out lived their drives.

Does that also count for disks or just zips and floppies?

I still have CDs that are from 92' and they work fine, of course I don't really care about those games now, just as a collection, playing them no way. So don't feel insecure about retail, I myself prefer retail and I take good care of my software. Worst case scenario (if you can take care of your disks), you'll have problems with your disks after 20 years or more, way more. It's not like they degrade in 1 year or so.

Actually the truth is Disks have a 10 year life span. If after 10 years they still hold the media and are usable then you are lucky. But all Manufacturers will tell you too back up media that is on a disk once theyget close too that age.

Disks aren't alive. So you've already outlived yours.

Games are linked to your account. You can download the games in as many pc's as you want as many times you want ( of course you will only be able to play it on only 1pc and not on 2pc's or more simultaneously ) . Just make sure you right your username and pass somewhere safe so you dont loose them and be sure to save the receipts of the games you buy ( in case of the highly unlikely account stealing you can email valve about it and they will ask you the receipts of the games you bought so that they will give you your games back)

How do I backup media on a disc? Video game discs are usually copy protected and stuff right? Can I do it without getting some illegal program? I take good care of all of my disc, but I really do want them to work longer than I live.
