Yep pretty much another "meh" day, the only two notables are TF 2 which I already have as part of the orange box (and never play because I can't stand MP) and GTA 4 I mean who the hell hasn't got GTA 4 by now ? This has to be the fifth time it has gone on sale at £5. Still I guess we can expect a few hundred threads about how to get GTA 4 running at double figure framerates :D

ARMA II for 20 bucks! That's a good deal. It's 20 times better than Dragon Rising anyway.

Cool, that's the only one that looked the least bit interesting... I wish it was multiplayer, though.

Yeah, that would be cool.

It's kinda like a single player MMO though, it's pretty cool. I wrote this for a nother forum but I'll post my review here too:

Sorry for double post but I finished the game this weekend...just want to give my final thoughts on the game...

I think the whole campaign took roughly 10 or so hours, so it's a bit on the short side. All in all I had 3 major bugs, 2 crashes and the memory leak (or whatever) described above once. In 10 hours of play I guess that's forgivable although the 2 crashes sucked because of the save system which only lets you save at camps...so I did loose progress a couple of times.

The story is your sister dies, and you basically ask the gods to release her from Hades, they agree provided you do a task for them...find the Sickle of Chronos. The beginning of the game you are a child which sets up the first part and acts as a tutorial...it's a bit boring but I guess does it's job. Once you are done you choose a profession based on what you used most as a kid (melee, ranged, magic) and you also choose a god which gives you some bonuses. The game opens up more as an adult, there is a main city with access to a portal, and a couple guys who will (for a price) take you to different locations. It's mostly linear as each location has a certain "level" where the enemies will be overwhelming if you are not strong enough, however there is some ability to do things in differing order...you even get bonuses for killing monsters with much higher base levels. This is actually a fun mechanic because you can level pretty fast in this game exploiting this mechanic :p

You have a main quest, which is "find the Sickle" that has you running around figuring out a mystery of who took it. You also run into some side mission stuff. There isn't a lot of them, but some of them are pretty cool. Like one that has you trying to find and defeat Karkinos the giant crab. It's more than just finding and killing him, you have to find "essences" of certain types of monsters in order to make a potion. This potion will counter his life leech attack, thus giving you the ability to kill it. Overall the missions were fun, but there is a lot of the "find X of Y" variants there, and there's a bit of back tracking too.

Another nice aspect is there is some ability to make minor choices in the game. It isn't that fleshed out or anything, but you can tackle certain quests/situations differently. In the game you are in competition with other heroes aligned to the other gods and periodically you will run into them (they are on the same mission as you). Occasionally you will be presented with a chance to help them, trick them, or just snub them off. For instance, I found one in a pit...I could have left her to die but I instead saved her. It doesn't really change anything in game much, but you do get some god favor or sometimes your actions can land you in the arena to settle a score.

For the actual gameplay I feel like there was some interesting ideas there. The MMO control/combat was kinda cool for a single player RPG. Once you become an adult the options do open up and you can develop strategies...it's fun but overall a bit shallow. The available skills (at least for warrior) weren't that many and I think most will play the same way as some of the other skills didn't seem that effective. You basically have a main damage attack, a DoT, and powerful attack to do only when enemy has an open wound, whirlwind attack, and a few utilities like a heal. There's some others like "finishers" but I honestly didn't find them useful. I think they could have done a better job here...had this game had a full skill tree with multiple paths (like WoW) would have been awesome...but as it is I'd just consider it serviceable.

Leveling is fairly simple...get enough XP and gain a level. You only get one attribute point per level, and there's 5 attributes (str, end, int, focus, quickness). Every level you do get an automatic increase in attribute though, with the majority going to your ****s primary attributes (warrior str, end for example). Still, with only a single point in your control per level it felt somewhat pointless, and you are just going to end up placing it in your characters primary attribute anyways.

You also get "god favor" for doing various deeds like killing monsters over your level, winning at the arena, or completing certain quests. It's basically a secondary XP bar. Now this could have been a VERY cool mechanic but unfortunately it's underdeveloped. In order to "cash" these points in you have to purchase a sacrifice animal from a vendor, which then sets the ceremony up at your chosen god's temple. When you approach it, you get a little cut-scene then get to ask for a certain reward. The problem is two fold...the cutscene isn't very good and repeats *everytime* which get's annoying, but more importantly the rewards are boring. Out of all the rewards my god offered only two were nice...one top tier passive that granted 10% to armor, and town portal scrolls. Everything else was pretty meh like +health temporary scrolls and other temporary utilitarian stuff. This could have been really cool if they offered some really powerful skills or passives. But as it is you could pretty much ignore it completely and your gameplay experience wouldn't change much.

Loot in the game was surprisingly fun. There's a few different tiers of items (gray, green, blue, gold) and the differences between them is drastic. There's not a lot of different stats, but you do find special attributes on items (like adds % to critical, ect). When you start to finally find a few gold letter items, it's cool because they are very powerful in comparison to other items. It's satisfying and probably the main reason I enjoyed the game. It's nowhere near TQ/Diablo level of sophistication, but fun in it's own right.

Overall? The game was ok...it has it's moments but I think suffers a lot due to many mechanics simply being underdeveloped. There's quite a few areas you can tell they wanted to do more, but probably didn't have the time or the budget. For me I think it was worth the $25 and was fun enough with some nice interesting aspects (the MMO-esque gameplay, loot, quests, ect). Of course in a game like this, your mileage will vary :p

BIS (Arma 2) just released patch 1.7 which the steam version has even though it says its only on 1.5. Anyway the patch has allmost doubled the performance on all setups (even older hardware). So if you were holding off due to performance issues its time to give this game another look.

Im running a quad,4gig,ati 4890 and running the game allmost maxed now with great performance. Allmost double what i was able to run pre patch.

That's good to hear. How is the multiplayer community though? I remember back in the day I played the crap out of Operation Flashpoint and loved the map editor. I'm keeping away from Dragon Rising though, I heard it wasn't that good.

Huge multiplayer community (although its mostly coop), the game has a near religiousfollowing overseas. There are some good american servers aswell, most are hardcore coop teamwork servers, i belive the Tactical Gamer crew (used to have a huge battlefield series presence) has like 6 servers. As for hold (battlefield capture system) there is the 100 player berzerk server which is overseas, peak player presence during the day. Then at night in america there are two good hold servers (as in number of players) last time i checked, that start to fill around 9pm est.

Maybe the forum must have a permanent post about Steam -and other DD services- deals. You known: Steam will keep making cuts all weeks, and the Steam users already have Steam to see the bargains, so what is happening here is that the forum is flooded with Steam sells and deals, making constant spam and advertisement towards a platform which is already dominant.

Would you like to constantly see new post any time GOG, Direct 2 Drive, Impulse or Xfire change the prices in a few games? Or about The Hut, Zavvi, Play.com offerings? Is starting to look as spam advertisement to me. I mean: you already have all this info in your Steam browser; the forum is now filled with tons of post about time-limited Steam deals which are currently totally useless. Anyone agree?

If we got a sticky that covers all digital stores, then. If one for each, then nononononoNO! :P You should go ask the mods to make a sticky for us. :)

Once you get the controls down (becomes second nature after about an hour), think battlefield 2 turned into a sim. BIS makes the games that the military traisn on, so its as close to the real thing as possible. Once you get into it, playing games like BC2 and MW2 seems like kids stuff.

Yup that is pretty much what I am intending to do, I have heard the game has horrendous bugs and it really isn't my cup of tea which is why I am going to ignore it. Now you might find this game to be the best thing since sliced bread and I can appreciate that. I don't think that and therefore I was just doing what any one else does on here and that is posting MY opinion on the quality of the steam sales so far.

If you dont have ARMA2 or TF2 then get them now! Two fantastic games!

ARMA2 had alot of bugs when it first came out but 7 patches later and it runs GREAT. Awesome game with TONS of user made campaigns and mods.

True the campaign was nearly unplayable due to the bugs when the game was released (not nearly, it was unplayable lol). Online had some issues too upon release. But everything has been fixed, along with the latest patch which upped the performance on low end machines. If you like military games your missing out bigtime if you pass this game up.

Arma 2 does indeed look epic, but I didnt like the demo. Maybe if it were $10, but I think i'll pass for now.

Agreed, I didn't see anything in the demo that interested me. I am usually patient with sims like these, but the guns, vehicles just doesn't really interest me

X-Com pack for $3.74? Maddening! I will not sign into Steam today... I will not let this shake my composure..

Try demo for Osmos. Its only 19megs! Its very relaxing. Also got my eye on Numen since i'm a big Titan quest fan and kinda looks like it.

Im really tempted to get GTA4, but i was wondering if there would be any way to choose which patch i use?.

Alot of people say that the 1.0.4.0 patch gave the best performance, im not gonna try 1.0.7.0 because its exactly the same as EFLC which runs terribly on my pc and i heard the 1.0.5.0 and 1.0.6.0 also had terrible performance

I just bought GTA4 and TF2. First games I've ever bought on Steam. =D I haven't bought any games in a while so I figure this is worth $12.

Best deals so far. Just bought ArmA II today. I might just look into buying the Commando's pack if I can't find my copies of the game.
