I get around 1 megabyte per second, which is pretty much the max speed for my connection (8mbit connection).

I usually get 250 KB/s (my max is 660 KB/s). I think the problem is the distance to the servers...

It really depends on your ISP. On the right content servers, I get as much as 4.3MB/s, but sometimes it's more like 330kb/s

Try using different servers, only download one thing at a time, etc.

20Mb broadband at its very best would give you 2MB but you would literaly have to live right next to the hotpoint with know one else using it. What speed are you getting?

Are you trying to download something right now? When there's a big game release, servers usually slow down, since much like many other services, Valve has probably built their infrastructure based on the assumption that not all users will be downloading at full speed all at once.

yes, there's 8 bits in a byte. Internet speeds are often quoted in bits since I suppose it sounds like a larger number. Most applications show bytes.

Yes. There's 8 bits in 1 byte. If you've got an internet connection rated at 20mb, you'll typically download at about 2.4MB (Megabytes) per second at best.

Seeing as I'm on a wireless connection, and I don't have the best internet, I typically get about 350-400 kb/s. However, I am running a line underneath my house so I can plug into my sheezyneezy so we'll see how fast it is then :D

lol and pay what...$60 a month or more for it? I mean AT&T charges $42 a month for a 6Mbps! Imagine what they would charge for 20Mbps if they even have that. I want to bump it to like 3 Mbps in hopes that Ill get at least 1 MB/s download speeds but now Im even skeptical about that. lol I know my University has like a 10Mbps connection or something. Its so fast I wish I could bring my computer in to download stuff.

Around 500-600 KB/s highest. Not too high. But when I'm downloading a full game on steam, I leave it overnight, and it will be done in the morning. :) Downloading demos that are roughly 3GB take me around 1-2 hours.

Around 1.2 MBPS... Unless my Imac starts randomly throwing a tantrum, lowering it's speed to around 300 KBPS on my macbook pro. Real pain downloading all 20GB of DA:O. Totally worth it, though.
