CD-keys are made from a formula, they could just generate more of them... Oh well, good on them for selling so much.

Sold out?!? How is that even possible? It's just a file you are downloading to your hard drive! What game was it that's sold out? This is interesting.

yeah, maybe, but steam doesn't have control over that.... it's not a valve game.

They must have expected next to no sales (the publisher/developer). How much of a success is it if it didn't even get into top 20 and they already ran out of keys XD.

It ran out of cd keys, so it is sold out. Valve has a note saying they will try to get more.

No, that only works if its a VALVE`s game. They have to ask the developers for more keys if they run out.

^^^ This - likely the developer hands over X # of keys for what they expect to sell for these blowouts (and keeps them 'stocked up' in the mean time with X number of keys), they ran out so Steam has to wait for the developer to get back to them w/ more. I figure this is the way it happens because of what the AI War developer posted regarding how activating keys on Steam works (for non steam games) [the developer has to come up with the keys in use, and a selection of keys that will likely be used in the near future].

Oh well, bought Bioshock instead (It's on sale in Preys place now, $5) which is a much, much, much better game.

Pfft...get out. Although...I do suddenly have this incredible urge to get this game. If it comes on sale again I'm totally buying it.

That's a lot of copies of a boring game. I couldn't stick with Prey for more than a few hours. It made me sleepy.

They are given a number of keys by publishers. I think there was a similar issue with Sacred Gold a while back where people bought the game but were not getting their keys, and Valve had to get more keys from the publisher. In an ideal world Steam games wouldn't even need keys, but I think maybe it is a way for publishers to validate how many copies of a game have been sold on Steam or something.

I think it's perfectly feasible that they ran out of keys, because it's a relatively unknown game and they probably were not expecting a lot of orders for it. It wasn't even on my radar until this sale and I bought it after briefly skimming over a few reviews, and I'm not even much of a shooter fan for the most part. After all, it was only $2.25.

Prey is no doubt worth $2.25, although I am much happier getting Bioshock for $4.99.

yeah, a somewhat well received game selling for just over 2 bucks isn't going to be popular. I guarantee you that there have were hundreds if not thousands of people on the fence about prey since it released (to very poor sales, and mild acclaim, on PC atleast) I was definitely one of them.
