Does anyone actually have all of these games? I mean, I know they are selling them cheap, but that is for good reason. I would love to participate in this sweepstakes, but all of the games are junk. Is this not the worst promotion Steam has ever had to try and sell their low end games or what?

Well I had some of the games. In fact two of the games, Defense Grid and Orcs must Die. So I didn't encounter that problem.

You must be new. Valve did the same thing during the Summer Sale and the Potato Sack event. Here's a tip, don't buy these games just to get the achievements.

I have Defcon, which is fun btw. And there is no reason why you couldn't have Spiral Knights or RoI, since they're free. And obviously a lot of people don't have all the games.

Its a sale tactic, they are not going to put in achievements for games that are 50$ cause people are less likely to buy it for the promitons. As said above dont buy the games for the sweepstakes.

Its cool that Steam is supporting small developers trying to make them some cash. Some of the indie games are quite good--worth a couple of bucks. None of them are worth buying solely for acheivements and lumps of coal in a sweepstakes that you are never going to win.

Good strategy. Make people buy a ton of little games they'll only play once to get a lump of coal :P

Some of the games are crap, but some are pretty good (ex: Orcs Must Die, Psychonauts, Defcon, EYE Cybermacy, Frozen Synapse, Audiosurf). Also, some of them are free too (Spiral Knights, Rise of Immortals). All that said, only a fool would buy games just to get these Christmas achievements. You're far more likely than not to get a coupon or coal than you are a free game, and even if you do get a free game it's also likely to just be something cheap ($2.50 or less) than a real, expensive game.

New? Have had Steam for YEARS. I usually don't bother with the stupid promotional crap because it is just that....crap. It is a sad marketing ploy. 99 times out of 100 I just close the Steam Update News box without scrolling through unless there is a game I am specifically hoping has a deal.

I don't fully agree. A coupon is bad ya but you can save your coal to have a chance to win your top 5, top 10 or all Steam games on January 2 2012 and alot of the cheap games are really fun like Spinral Knights, Defense Grid: The awakening ect.

Chance to win a good game or the grand prize is small but the games are so cheap and you get a chance to try out some good games that you thought is bad and if you are so lucky to get one of the really good game like Batman: Arkham City then you just get all your money back and also not all coupon is worthless. if you get a Gold coupon then you can use it on this Winter Sale.

Saying "the chance to win is small" is a huge overstatement of your odds. Consider that there are millions of people automatically being entered into the Steam drawing. Now consider that most of them will probably have multiple coals, giving them multiple entries. Even if you had 1000+ coals, your chances of winning even the bottom tier prize would be so low that they're statistically negligible. In other words, you have about as good of a chance as winning a real lottery as you do winning the Steam contest.

I'm just saying that you get a chance to win something and not that you WILL win something. You can still have fun while play some games that you thought is bad and you can support those Indie devs. Like me I never thought that Defense Grid can be so fun to play and I'm sure that I wouldnt try it if I didnt get anything in return.

You don't know what you're talking about and you probably noticed that anyone can enter it, you just check your inventory and there, you are already participating, if you want to try your luck, you have "free achievements" from either steam related stuff or F2P games, why exactly did you think that whining about whining would be an interesting thing to discuss on a forum?

Some of them are crap yeah but some of them are better then games that cost more. Buying games just for the achievements is fairly stupid especially when there's no hope of you winning the draw because people abusing coal.

to say that all the games are junk is a mighty big assumption when you havent played im sure the majority of them by the implication of you yourself asking "Does anyone actually have all of these games?" just because theyre indie does not mean in the slightest bit that theyre junk. you are one misinformed uneducated individual if thats truely how you feel about something....without giving a chance first. did i also mention closeminded??? no? well there ya go too...

I am entitled to my opinion and do not have to play a game to think that it is junk. That is what reviews and gameplay videos are for. I don't have to play a game to formulate an opinion based on screenshots, game description, review score, and genre. Besides, just because you like certain types of games doesn't mean that I have to also. I am sure that some of these games appeal to some people, but if they were really genuinely good games (in the eyes of the vast majority) they would be much more popular, and not a part of this stupid promo. So that being said, I don't have to give a game a chance, and to assume that I am uneducated is a much larger oversight on your behalf than any opinion that I could ever have about a video game.
