Hey

I recently downloaded Steam, and to try it out I attempted to download a few demos. But I didn't get them, because they were downloading so slowly. The download rates I was getting was between 5 - 25 kb/s, agonisingly slow, and not at all worth it.

My internet connection isn't fast, it's only 1MB/S (I live in a rural area in the Scottish Highlands, about 4km from the local exchange with no cable available,) but I know I should be downloading at about 110 kb/s.

If downloading demos takes this long, there won't be any point in using steam for full games, and I'll just have to buy them from shops.

Help please?? Any way to fix this??

Sometimes it slows down for me, but Id say 95% of the time i download off of Steam i get 500-600k.

But if its going slow it will be going 200-300k

Dont give up on steam yet man, might just be a slow time at the moment. (also some of the demos are as big as some of the full games)

Only other thing i can think of, is make sure you dont have any P2P or other downloads going at the same time as you downloading off steam.

I do have normal cable internet though, so not to sure about yours

Yeah but there's a massive difference between 25k and 300k.... Do you think it's a problem on my end or a problem with Steam?

I think I'll keep it for a while, and check download speeds regurarly, at different times of the day to see if it's worth keeping.

Yeah that is a big differnce, i dont think its Steam though as i rarely get slow speeds, just once in awhile and i dont have a super fast connection or anything.

All i can think of is to do what you said above and try at differnt times. Its got to be either A) Just a bad time you tried or B) Something on your end either with your modem/connection or something else downloading at the same time.

try again later. i also have the same connection and sometimes i also get slow speeds. But most of the times speed is about 100k(probably the servers of steam at certain times are full thats why you get low speed). Also sometimes a download starts with 10-20 k and 10-20 minutes later the speed goes up

I just tried again right now, and I'm getting speeds of about 60-70k downloading the Audiosurf demo. It's an improvement, but it can still be faster...

Before you blame Steam make sure it's not your own connection. Go download something from a website where you know for sure that you should be able to download at your max speed. Or try to find a website that can test your download speed. The latter isn't very reliable, though.

http://www.speedtest.net/

Just keep in mind that those kind of websites aren't 100% accurate. For example on the above website, even if I choose a server from my own country it's still only 80% accurate.

You might want to check your ethernet drivers. I had this exact problem until I installed the latest drivers and my download speeds were back up to normal.

When you download those demos from other places does it download slow too? Maybe the servers are flooded with other people downloading off it so its running slower.

Ok I tried that speedtest site, and got 1034kb/s, which is what I should be getting, and that equates to a download rate of about 110k yeah? So my connection is fine.

I'd test a download now, but the thing is, I CAN'T LOG IN NOW!!!

It wont even let me on to the support section of their site. But I looked about a bit and it turns out the servers are down for maintenance or something.

I'l try again once I can log on again.
