Restart steam? :? dunno.

If that doesn't work go to the properties of the game and verify cache integrity

If it's giving you a "timeout" error, and you're trying to install the game (which I'm assuming includes downloading from Steam), it sounds like an internet issue. Reset your modem/router, and make sure Steam isn't being blocked by your firewall or anything.

I bought a hardcopy in Gamestop and activated it with the key for steam, how do I let it past my firewall?

Have you been using Steam before? Have you downloaded and installed games with it already?

Well, if you're using windows 7, just open your start menu and type "windows firewall" into the search bar. One of the options that comes up should be "allow a program through windows firewall". Select that, and it'll bring up your allowed programs list. find steam in the list, and make sure it's allowed full access to anything and everything. And, again, check/reset your router/modem. If none of that works... I'm out of ideas.

I just checked Steam is allowed through the firewall, perhaps do you know anything about creating local game cache? this is where I can never get past.

Hmm. Nope. That should all be done automatically by steam. Umm... I guess.. since thats the only game you have on steam anyway... go ahead and just uninstall steam and reinstall it. See if that helps.

Anyway thanks for your help, but to be honest I think it is a router problem and I will try again tomorrow .
