Since the update I am no longer able to connect to steam servers to play DOD:S etc... anyone know of a fix for it? Norton is being an ass and nothing I've tried (Short of uninstalling it, which I most likely will not do) has worked... any help would be nice.

Yeah nortons usually pretty stupid about games and online stuff. Best thing to do is to disable it and play away! (right click the norton icon in the tray and select disable). at least thats how it was in the 2005 version :)

EDIT: yeah your first mistake was norton anyways lol.  But really, whats a good antivirus?  AVG free seems to look a little low now, im looking for a firewall, blocking ads, banners, popups, and viruses/worms/trojans.

It is valve's mistake, is not your fault or norton's (but consider using a different AV), make sure you restart steam.

what I use:Avast (free version), AVG (also free edition), PC tools firewall plus (also free), and ad-aware SE personal (also free but I hardly ever use it). Just go google these or download them from download.com and I have never got a virus or any thing bad. PS I use CCleaner and Auslogics to keep my computer running good.

If you have the time, know how, and a bit of common sense, Windows Firewall will suffice if you tweak it a bit. I used to use Zone Alarm, but it became a haste after a while. Avast! is one of the best as far as AV goes, but I converted over to AVG (which I have configured to scan manually) and have no regrets. Checkout tweakguides.com Windows XP/Vista Tweaking Companion, which has an awesome section on PC security:

Also understand that Norton is a virus in itself. You lose something like 33% of your computer's overall performance due to Norton's bigass footprint and bloat.

I found this on steams support forums

If you continue to have problems updating Steam, please exit from Steam, and then delete the following files from your Steam directory.

C: ProgramFiles Steam Steam.dll
C: ProgramFiles Steam SteamUI.dll
C: ProgramFiles Steam ClientRegistry.Blob

If you continue to have problems finding any servers, please exit from Steam, and then delete the following files from your Steamconfig directory.

C: ProgramFiles Steam config serverbrowser.vdf
C: ProgramFiles Steam config masterservers.vdf

It worked for me.

Don't be an ass. I'm trying to find an answer here. Also, disabling everything didn't work, and it won't let me shut it off all together.

Thanks, the second one was all I needed. I'm glad someone actually came here to help ;) But like someone said, it was Steam's doing. Norton doesn't impact my computer's performance in ANY way, and it doesn't use but a tiny amount of memory (I've got 3 gigs as it is). I like Norton, so you Norton bashers are as bad as Vista bashers, which I also have and love.

Norton hardly finds any viruses and is by far the biggest system hog there is. and on top of that it costs money to renew your subscription.

Go to Cnet and read the editorial reviews comparing Norton with other major AV programs. I will take their word over yours any day.
