Quick question, why is it Origin downloads games so much faster then steam?

Example BF3 takes around 3-4 hours to slow down on Origin.

Games of a similar size or a little smaller take around 12-20 hours on steam.

I prefer steam alot more but its a pain in the ass having to download stuff now :(

Depends on the connection and the day. Steam is runnin awfully slow these days because of the xmas sale.

In normal days both should download at ur max speed.

Nope its been like this for about 2 years and we have moved house twice in that time so had new internet providers etc etc, its always taken 12++ hours to download a normal game. But all origin games take less than 4 hours

I have an ancient dsl connection, and those games around 10-12 gb take 6 hours max to download.. But yeah, somedays download speeds will drop to 100kb/s and won't go much higher than 300..

looks like your are trying to troll Steam and need others approval, as mentioned before just like other users i never had any issue with Steam for the past 4 years or so.

It can depend on a lot of things, your internet connection, your distance to the server, whether the servers are overloaded or not whether the game is popular(I can download dead space 1 with 1 mb/sec and download TF2 with 7mb/sec at the same time so there is somekind of priority order). Thats about it, and about EA what can I say they are relativelly new with huge budget and new tech and few custoners that use thair Origin service(of course compared to stem).

I think its because there are not so many users that download games at the same time on Origin compare to Steam. I almost always get full speed when download on Steam. if you have problem with speed on Steam then try change "Download Region" to another country.

I'm thinking origin lies about DL speeds. Unless my internet is maintained by The Fantastic 4, I don't think I really downloaded BF3 at 15mb/s

i get 1-1.2 mb/s on Steam, and 200kb/s on Origin. So it depends person to person.

Have you tried switching to a different download server in steam ? In the steam client go to the steam tab and select settings. In the new box that comes up click on the downloads and cloud tab. You should see an option to change your download region server. just click the down arrow and choose another location. I know it says it autodetects the "best one" but I have found that to be a load of rubbish. I am routinely connected to the London server yet the closest to me is actually the Manchester server.

At any rate it might be worth a try after the christmas sales. Things will undoubtedly be slow at the moment with millions of people taking advantage of the sales. Having said that though I have never really had any problem with download speeds outside of the sales and usually get my full 800k speed. Whilst it is fair to say that Steam has a much larger customer base (well over 30 million compared to Origin's 5 million) outside of the sales I don't think it has a huge bearing on the overall download speed of steam.

switch your server location. that should give you an increase depending on which server you pick in accordance to your geography

Steam used to download really fast for me, I used to get 3MB/s... these days I'm lucky to get 1MB/s. Maybe it's just being used more?

Origin is like lightning, Steam is still better overall though.

I've never waited more the 2 - 3 hours for a steam game to download. It usually averages at 1.5 - 2 mb/s download. I would hardly call that slow.

Because my DSL connection is capped at 2 megabit, I can't tell a difference between either. Perhaps with a higher-bandwidth connection you can tell.

I don't really know. I get 40MBS a second download speed (don't be hatin'), but usually I only get about 9 or 10MBS a second through steam. Fast enough though.
