Ok this is getting a bit weird. Yesterday, or maybe the day before yesterday (cant remember) there was a new update for Steam client. After that I couldnt connect to the steam service. It always tries to connect for like 30 seconds and then comes up with the message that there might be a problem with my connection or with steam servers. I have Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit.

I know something about computers so I tried to fix it. I tried:

- removing steam from firewall so it will be added again

- deleting stuff from steam folder so it had to update again. And it did, only to not connect to the steam service afterwards

- restarting the PC

- running as Admin

- logging in from the internet browser - this worked so the servers must be fine but I can just buy games there, as the features are limited there. But I still cant connect with the steam client

All of this didnt work. Does anyone have this problem since the latest update?

Thanks.

logging from internet doesnt mean that you will be able to connect from the client if they are doing a sever maintenance which is most likely what is causing this Also if you have a torrent client running exit from that log into steam and then start it again since alot of times since torrent clients use all the available bandwidth they can other programs that try to use the internet might experience difficulties

Thank you for the response. I really hope it is a maintenance because I have no idea what else would it be. I dont use torrent clients at all. I cant even run games since I cant switch to offline mode. Not that it bothers me much but still.

Try logging in offline mode 6-7 times. It can be picky but in the end i always manage to connect in offline mode Also try deleting ClientRegistry.Blob ( do a backup first though ) from steam folder ( its known it causes alot of troubles and if you delete it steam will autoupdate itsself when you try to start without that file )

I deleted it, I deleted almost everything from the root directory and it updated with no problems. By logging in ofline, do you mean disabling network on my PC and running steam? Havent thought of that yet. Ill give it a try.

Well while this thread is up, I got a good friend who actually can't connect to Steam or the Blizzard updater for some odd reason. Ive tried everything for this guy. Removing firewalls, anti viruses, even removed the router completly out of the picture but he still can't connect. He's running 64 bit windows vista. Always running in admin of course.

Any ideas?

Alright I cant even go offline. When the connection is disabled via firewall completely, it stays at Updating for a while and then it offers going into Offline mode. But after clicking that it says I cant go to offline mode.

Here hope this will help

USING OFFLINE MODE ON A PC.

  1. Start Steam online - make sure theRemember my passwordbox on the login window is checked
  2. Verify that all game files are completely updated - you can see the update status for a game under theLibrarysection (when the game shows as100% - Readyit is ready to be played in Offline Mode)
  3. Launch the game you would like to play offline to verify that there are no further updates to download - shut down the game and return to Steam once you have confirmed that the game can be played
  4. Go toSteam > Settingsto ensure theDon't save account credentials on this computeroption isnotselected
  5. From the main Steam window, go to theSteammenu and selectGo Offline
  6. ClickRestart in Offline Modeto restart Steam in Offline Mode

In other words you must have done this once and from there on you can start steam in offline mode without having to go online

But I have to do this in the client which I cant. The client wont even show up due to the error message. If it doesnt start working till Monday, Im gonna contact their customer service.
