It just says 'Preparing to launch -Insert Game Here-' and it stays that way. I Tried to launch MW3 earlier and it was 'Preparing to launch it for about 2 hours.

My PC is fine as I was playing it yesterday on max settings with no problems. Any ideas?

The latest update seems to have broken steam. It's not just you, I went on the steam forums and a lot of people seem to be having this, if not all.

No games can be launched

Steam won't even shut down properly because it won't connect to steam cloud.

This is a perfect example of why I don't like that games are tied to steam. One problem with the service and you can't play any games.

It's everyone, typical of Valve, you don't even know if they're on it, they never say anything regarding major problems, just silence and maintenance announcements...I hope it gets fixed soon because it's outrageous, some games work if you run the exe from their Steam subfolder, but some require to be authenticated through Steam when you launch em and Steam is useless atm.

I don't think that's a legitimate "perfect example" because these problems happen extremely rarely, a perfect example would be a service like Steam going down regularly for extended periods of time.

Still it only has to occur once and when all your games that you want to play are on steam you are royally screwed.

I try to avoid services like steam and GFWL where you are tied to the service because when something goes wrong with the service you can't acces any games.

But sometimes there is no other option. If I had the choice I certainly wouldn't tie my games to a certain service even though it has definit advantages (steam cloud, automatic updates)

Would you ?

I have this problem too. Don't bother checking game files integrity. Try offline mode. I can play all my games in that mode. Not sure if MP will work or not.

Symptoms:

  • Games with Steamcloud function won't launch and stuck at "Preparing to launch 'game title'".
  • Launching games that have no Steamcloud function pop up notification about Steam's 2008 agreement. The games worked though, didn't stuck at "Preparing to launch" window.
  • Infinite "Syncing Steamcloud" when exiting Steam client.

Hm tried to launch a couple of games here and not having any problems on my end. Now before I get attacked and accused of being some sort of "steam fanboy" I am merely posting to show that not everyone is having the problem. I was wondering if anyone could name a specific game that isn't working, I have tried valve games and non-valve games and everything is working as it should be.

I had to kill the process and then it would re-launch attempt to update then log me back in. I'm not to worry about and don't get butt hurt when I can't play anything. Time just go do something else around the house and check back when I feel like it.

Skyrim, Demolition inc, Bastion (thanks Steam, I also lost my save for this one), CS:S, DoD:S, TF 2, Anomaly Warzone Earth, Fallout NV, MW 3 SP/MP, Defense Grid, Dungeon Defenders, Dirt 3, Dota 2, Just Cause 2, Lara Croft, Magicka, MoW Assault Squad, Orcs Must Die, Overlord 2, Rage, Renegade Ops, Rock of Ages, Sonic Generations, Worms Golf, Worms Reloaded, Worms Ultimate Mayhem, in short, all the games I tried today, I have tenths of others installed on Steam, but I doubt at least one of them will work.

There's a temp workaround here.

It seems to be some problem with the cloud. You can also just switch to offline mode but I don't think all games will work with that.

I am not someone who complains, but Steam really suck. I have bought 2 games, Skyrim and Darsksiders and I could not install neither because it says duplicate key all the time. These where games I took out of the plastic wrapping. Now I must spend hours of time and affort to get a problem I did not create resolved. I am not happy.
