So christmas is comming and I have a limit of about $350. Im looking at three different things I could choose. The logitech Z-5500 5.1 stereo system to upgrade my....well non existant one. A 2.66GHZ core 2 duo processor, or an 8800GTS......

My current system is a coolermaster case,

abit IB9 LGA 775 Intel P965 Express ATX mobo,

1GB x 2 DDR2 800 ram PNY,

Core 2 duo 1.8GHZ processor,

500W thermaltake PSU,

and a GeForce 7950GT 256MB.............

Any suggestions or opinions? Even if you think im dumb lol LET 'ER RIP!!

You didn't mention an audio card that I noticed. As a message writer on a game- oriented web site, you should realize that the onboard audio chips have no decoding built in, so that chore becomes an added load on the CPU. Of the several options that you named, I'd think that the more powerful CPU would represent the largest area of potential improvement, however, the biggest selling point of the Intel C2D for enthusiasts isn't the stock core speeds at all, it's the headroom most of them have for overclocking, which at this point it doesn't seem that you have chosen to experiment with, at least not from what you told us .

So, if we eliminate the CPU as a swap, my suggestion is a high quality audio system for the PC. I would hold off on any of the old FAB versions of the 8800 cards to wait on the newer thinner-strata ones around the corner, of which the 8800 GT is the harbinger.

upgrade CPU to E6750, then spend the rest on speakers. or save the 150 you would have left and try and get $100 more to upgrade graphics card as well, a quick 2 day telemarketing gig will do the trick.

sorry bout leaving the info out. it is an onboard audio chip but it has a digital optic audio output which is why i figured it was sufficient. and no i havent messed with overclocking........to be honest I havent educated myself in the art enought o be messing with it so any pointers would help :). and 2.8 would be ok without too much risk?

ok and if i decided to go the speaker route.....is the Z 5500 a good stereo, or is it simply better to get a nice 2.1 audio system? Ive heard that comp 5.1 stereos have been notorious for lousy quality because they simply sell you the 5 speakers and thats the main deal, but neglect quality in doing so. but the Z 5500 is supposedly the best 5.1 so i was hoping that it would be good as well, plus is has digital optical in which, I would assume, would give me better sound output.

Hey just to let you know I'm new at this as well caue all I have done is oc my graphic card a bit and that was done by a tool I downloaded from the internet by a person in this form.

Also alll I really know how to do is take things apart not put them back together. but I have put in a cd/dvd rom in and a graphics card and audio card and ram and that is all. With this stuff I could almost put a pc together my self but I don't have money or the time at the moment I'm to busy upgrading my new pc as it is.

You say you build this one and you don't know how to oc your psu I think that is what it is. It is hard for me remember what abreviation goes to what.

When I took this pc appart I didn't realize how simple it is to or would be to make a pc your self.

I'm not sure if they are making these speaker any more but I have the 5450's and they are wireless well not really caue the rear need a outlet or a strip to plug into. Most people suggest the 5500's over this one. The reason is probable cause it has more power and all of the speakers have wires to them and they are less expensive then the ones I have.

Anyways hope you enjoy what ever you decide to get.

I forgot to mention that these speakers to me at least are really nice and the sound that comes from them is great.

Scence I have an Audigy 4 sound blaster and it supports up to a 7.1 speaker system to me with this card and with these speakers the sound is great. Btw at least in my room it rattles the walls and ground at least in the house that I'm in at the moment.

yeah i think you are looking for the abbreviation CPU, PSU stands for power supply. and the 5450s are still available but im not into the wireless thing. too much can go wrong with those. nothing is as reliable as a nice solid speaker wire.

oh and building a comp isnt as easy as it sounds i found out. its more than just putting pieces together. its putting them together RIGHT first and froemost then, making them work together. i dont know how many times i had to face the "blue screen of death" before i got my system working. but thats was because i didnt know anything yet
