Well, what previous titles have you tried? Do you like micromanagement? I'd suggest either Supreme Commander, or World in Conflict. The first has base-building and micro-management. The second has no base-building and not as much "mm" but still some, as its a RTS.

But, if you are looking for an RTS that is(IMO) the best, buy the Starcraft Battlechest. Its like $20USD. If you don't like Starcraft, there may just be no hope for you...j/k. But seriously, SC is one of the best games of all time, and if you don't enjoy some part of it, RTS's may just not be your genre.

Pretty hard to suggest a strategy game, I don't know what you are looking for exactly.

As a starter I would recommend Medieval Total War 1, and then see if there is some aspect you like or dislike...this game is pretty much a "jack-off-all-trades" game in the strategy genre. After you try it, you will see if there is any part of the game you really likes and would want toplay further. The Total War series itself evolves toward Real Times battles mostly, and cripples the players in an extensive micromanagement setting for the GBT; IMO....so I would really recommend you try the 1st as an overall view...especially that it is probably extremely cheap if not free to try it.

My favorite are: Civilisations, Galcivilisation, Medieval Total War 1, Fantasy War, Domination: Massive assault like never before, Advance War, Romance of the 3 Kingdoms.

Most peoples will prefer real time stuff as Populus/Warcraft and all it descendants...or Europa Universalis.

Strategy should be subdivide into many styles, atm it is merely RTS or GBT (okay TBS for all the nazies out there), while in fact, it could use so much more subdivisions.

Please don't start with CoH. I love the game, and it is the best RTS of 2007, but it is not the place to start someone trying to get into RTSs. Spend the $10 on the Starcraft suite and play throughthe SP campaign. If the graphics matter so much that it ruins the experience for you, then you might want to get out of PC gaming completelyand buy a Wii.

it seems to me that he has played rts in the past. it's just that he hasn't enjoyed them. that's why i think coh might be good for him; it's different from other rts, which might be appealing to him.

If you haven't really played much RTS in the past, I would suggest staying well away from Supreme Commander. The game has a big learning curve which has even long-time Total Annihilation fans (the "spiritual predecessor" to SupCom) such as yours truly withdrawing sorrily into Sandbox mode after my first game. Company of Heroes and World in Conflict are great, accessible RTSs ideal for if you don't fancy jumping in the deep end just yet. You may also like Starcraft and its expansion, but you'll never see me directly recommending them.

i like good strategy games.

wait... can i say that? i have NEVER completed a single strategy game. except Warcraft 1. yet i've played pretty much all of them. recent favourites being Dawn Of War, Company Of Heroes and Supreme Commander. i pretty much complete a skirmish missions with all the factions, and i'm done. after that i've seen all the game has to offer.

BUT. they do have some challenging multiplayer modes, but i prefer FPS games online.

what's my point here? try them. you could be surprised :)

Strategy is the best genre. It's very refreshing for an RPG or FPS fan! You should buy one, maybe the upcoming Starcraft 2, sequel to the best RTS ever...

Post on my blogs and look at my images! All my images are from RTSs, so that'll give you an idea.

RTS games are addictive for a few reasons. I guess the first is the intellectual challenge. A lot of people like to be mentally stimulated and challenged while gaming - and war games are a perfect outlet for that kind of thing. It takes thought and planning to effectively win a battle against a cunninng opponent.

Another reason would be that war is lots of fun! Unleashing the kind of destruction you can in an RTS - destroying whole armies, perhaps even cities, is just a great vent. Tearing your enemies apart brutally... I don't know, there's just something gratifying about it. I guess it's kinda like the feeling you get when you pop someone in the head in a FPS, only it's on a much huger scale. It just really satisfies my bloodlust.

Recommending a good RTS to a complete RTS newbie is awkward, because most of the good RTS games feature advanced gameplay mechanics that would be overhwelming for a newcomer. As someone above says, don't start with Company of Heroes. Brilliant game, but starting out with an RTS with zonal damage, strong focus on unit counters, a cover mechanic, lots of micromanagement, an advanced resource system and more besides - it can just be too much.

But then again, if you go for simpler RTS games, you're usually going older. Which means less polished, fewer features and refinements - worse visuals.

I would recommend one of two games. The first is Command and Conquer 3. Just to clarify, I personally dislike this game, but it's a very simple tank spammer - all you do is chain-build a small group of units and send them in. It has few advanced or confusing RTS elements - C&C is also one of the founding fathers of the genre so you can learn a lot about RTS structure through C&C. It's also a fun game. Simple fun.

My personal favourite RTS is Dawn of War. It's a little more advanced than C&C3 because it has a lot of unit-counters, a lot of armies, a squad and reinforcement mechanic. It's got a lot more going on, but it has some awesome and brutal melee combat. It's set in the awesomest roleplaying world ever, Warhammer 40K, and it has reasonably good visuals. I'd recommend giving the demos of both games a shot. If you are a quick learner, you could try Company of Heroes - which also has a demo - but I think it'd be too intimidating for someone who doesn't know much about RTS games.

Well said as always. I would recommend also CnC: Generals. It's also a very simple game in the vein of CnC 3.

Ahh no. He (or she) can get by without StarCraft. He (or she) can playFAR superior RTS's than StarCraft. Such as Command and Conquer (entire series), WarCraft III, Age of Empires III, Star Wars: Empire at War,Emperor: Battle for Dune, Universe at War, the Battle for Middle-Earthseries, and probably lots of others that I haven't played yet.

If you like RTS's, I would recommend the ones I mentioned above. If you're into TBS's, I would recommend Civilization III & IV, Disciples II, or Galactic Civilizations II. Heroes of Might and Magic is quite nice too.
