It seems when i play open world games like S.T.A.L.K.E.R and Oblivion when i move arround the games stutter every 10-15 seconds. It's a one second holdback and it's really annoying. I also had this on Far Cry 2, but i changed to DX 9 setting in the game and it stopped. Is there something wrong with the games or my PC? I tried defragmenting and installing my old windows XP, but it was the same.

Sounds like you've got the texture settings set too high in your games; posting your specs would've been helpful! If your gfx card doesn't have much onboard memory, or even if your computer is lacking memory, then you'll find your games will stutter as textures are loaded (especially games with open game worlds such as those you mention). Lowering texture settings and/or resolution should help.

Agreed, that is strange. What background processes do you have running? Could a virus scanner be scanning game files before they are loaded? Might be worth disabling your anti-virus temporarily to see what happens.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with xp so that is a moot point previous poster.Have you tried different drivers OP,the 185 series are dreadfull and i have GTX 260 in SLI,try the 181 series.Edited to add i was having stuttering problems in oblivion and bioshock but reverting back to older drivers fixed the problem. And what brand is your PSU?

The most probable cause is bad Hard Drive (or so I've been told a min ago) Can i test my Hard Drive somehow? I tried testing for errors on both disks using that windows option but nothing came up. Maybe there is some other third party sowtware i can use?

So hmm... i installed 181.20 drivers, with clean install and it was the same. So that wasn't the problem. I am gonna try some hardware diagnostic tools for download. I mean it's gotta be the HD right? Are there some settings about it from windows about the HD, maybe i have tampered with it and ruined it.

Same thing happened to me the other day. I installed the latest vid card drivers and used compressed air to blow all the dust out of my machine...no problems since.

Are you sure it was the same thing. I can't open my PC because it's under waranty, if i open the case I'l loose 1 year waranty. For me to clean it up i have to carry it to the compound and they must clean it up. It's stupid but it's a pain carrying it there So are you sure it was the same? I could post a video if you want to. Like you move arround and it stutters, freezes for 1 or half a second and then it's fine for 20 seconds and then again...You sure? Thanks

If you have a bad HD then it should also affect other things apart from games. Try playing a video from your hard drive or play some MP3s or stream videos from the internet. If it's only in games that you experience the problem then maybe the video card is suspect. It may work now but it might eventually just die without warning. I once had a video card back in 2003 that played games alright, but once in a while any game I play would just stop for about 5-10 seconds and then play again and maybe an hour later it would happen again. Outside games it was ok, but eventually it the lag occurred too often (every 5 mins) and then BSODs starting occurring. A new vid card fixed my problem.

Agreed, but topics don't get moved. Mods on Bethesda, when they move threads, it shows you that on the Index. Not so here.

I didn't think about it sorry. Well im bumping this because i now installed all the games i own. I installed The Last Remnant (also got stutters) and Assassins Creed (stutter free). When i get this for example in Oblivion it says loading area, and in STALKER i get this little flashing icon which means that the textures are being loaded. It's like my computer can't load the textures quickly so it pauses for a second, or it just's freezes when new textures are being loaded doesn't mean it's loading them when it freezes....does that make any sense?

Well it's a super far-fetched idea but you could try disabling page file, I doubt that's gonna help tho if it appears in both XP and Vista. Another far-fetched idea could be that the HDD has reverted to PIO from DMA, has happened to me but it was ages ago so not sure how likely it's with modern computers. Open world games might have some stuttering when loading a new area anyway, I wouldn't be too worried about it if it only happens for e.g. when moving to a new area.

You said the same thing happens on the lowest gfx settings too didn't you? That is odd. Certainly pointing towards a hardware fault. I take it your system is showing all 4 gigs of memory and all of your gfx card memory (is it 512meg or a 1 gig card)?

Assassins Creed ran fine; was that under dx10 or dx9?

this thing happened to me a while ago when i moved from xp32 to vista64 idk if it had to do with the 64 or not but for sure had todo with vista... the thing here is that i only have 2 gb of ram and idk how much it will get better with 4gb (maybe ill play thief with my dads memory sticks... bwahaha)

just to give you an example i had a 7600gt(256mb) 2gb ram q6600, and bf2 in xp ran as smooth as silk maxxed out, but when i changed to vista the stuttering was unbearable until i changed textures to medium, and even thenI could only play on karkand because with any larger map i had 1-2 second stuttering every 5 seconds. and now with a 512ram gfx i have no problems at all.

With this i can say that in your case most certainly is your HDD, since it is the only thing left other than the OS butyou already said that you tried in XP

Yes, even with the lowest setting it's the same. Yes all 4 gigs are being shown. My card has 896 Mb ram.Assassins Creed is under DX10.

No, no it happens all the time, it's not when you enter a new area, it's all the time. I tried disabling Pagefile, there are still stutters, but i think there are less now, On Stalker, on oblivion it's the same. I don't know how to check that PIO to DMA thing can you tell me pls.
