I am looking to upgrade from my 8800GTX sli to a single card. I have been looking at the gtx650 and ati 7850, are either one of these suitable upgrades, if so which should i go with, or do you have another card in mind? I am looking to spend $150 or less. If it matters my other specs are:

core 2 quad q6600

4gb ram

1000w psu

windows 7 64 bit

is it really worth upgrading? i'm not overly familiar with those cards but from what i've seen they're fairly low end. your cpu and ram are just as dated as your card(s). i'd wait until you can upgrade everything other than the psu and os

Those were the titans of their time... They are dated but by no means low end haha. The rest of the hardware is also dated but still fine for gaming on at the moment, for a cheap upgrade I'd go with the 7850. Then maybe look at upgrading the rest of the system in the future. You'll find that as we move into the next gen of consoles, that PC games are going to really start pushing the hardware once again. Remember that the new GPU's are just around the corner and if you're not really bothered about having the best, then you'll be able to pick up last years cards at really good price.

You'd be much better off saving up a little bit more for a 7950 this one comes with 4 free games including Crysis 3 plus your pick of 3 other games like farcry 3 or sleeping dogs NVIDIA offers virtual in game credit with there cards. The 7850 won't hold up well in more modern games the extra performance and vram will are well worth it and price difference is not so big.

You could try the 650ti boost, the standard 650 is a bit weak but the ti boost version is much better and still good value

I would recommend at least an HD 7950. But, if you must keep the price at $150, then go with an HD 7870 Tahiti LE. It uses a Tahiti GPU that's between an HD 7950 and HD 7870. It has 1536 SP's and 24 CU's, compared to 1280 / 20 (7870), 1792 / 28 (7950), and 2048 / 32 (7970)...

oh i remember the good old days when i had my trusty q6600 and 8800gtx, but that was back in 06/07 i think :)

as we're almost in 2014 i'd suggest waiting a little and having a complete system overhaul, but that's just me. looks like he's been given some good advice anyway on card upgrades
