Superb games with less than great graphics, any examples?

Rise of Nations (GameSpot's Game of the Year, but I didn't like it)

One must remember that in the years those games came out their graphics were not less than superb.

All of those games were probably considered to have superb graphics at the time they were released. Maybe you should rephrase the question?

defcon everybody, audiosurf come to mind....their graphics were simple at the time of their release but they were still superb games

Going by today's standards: Dark Messiah Of Might & Magic Prime Minister Forever (political simulator) KOTOR Fallout 1 & 2 AD&D Darksun (old, real old, one of the first free roam games...) Freelancer

Jagged Alliance was great... even though the graphics were pretty rough... even for '94.

Same goes with Civilization, it had very basic graphics, yet it's infinitely addictive.
