I may be crazy, but is it too much to ask for that, someday, some publisher develop a game that's a single player, massive open world RPG a la Oblivion that is focused on a comic book-y world where you get to play as a fledgling superhero? I don't mean something like that piece of crap City of Heroes where the 'heroes' outnumber the citizens they're protecting by 4 to 1. I mean a game that would exist in a massive open world with hundreds of quests like Elder Scrolls 4, where you'd start off as a normal person and slowly attain superhuman abilities, face increasingly powerful enemies, gain allies, .etc. Anything to add some color to the same old "orcs, elves, swords, shields" games or the "military fights aliens/monsters/mutants/zombies" game.\

I haven't seen anything on the horizon like the game I described. Anyone else hear anything otherwise?

I hope that it doesn't resemble Oblivion, that game was a awful rpg.. And regardless how large it was, in a very paradoxical sense there was little to do.

Yes, less orcs, more super-villains! Sounds like a great idea, although I would not copy Oblivion blindly, as the game lacked any reason to explore/loot after level 25. And a little more variety to your surroundings, not copy and paste textures in every cave you visit. And less forest.

I only use Oblivion as a model because of the interesting first person/third person perspective on such an immersive RPG experience. It was something I'd never seen before. There are a million FPS, but FPRPG? Not as many in the quality of Oblivion. Also, I mention Oblivion because of the fun factor. I played through the entire game almost a year ago, clocked in probably over 100 hours, recently upgraded my vid card to a 8800GT, re-installed Oblivion and have clocked in another 20-25 hours already. I just find it to be extremely fun. The possibilities of a superhero RPG in its vein would be endless.

Play any Gothic game or Morrowind, if you can get past the graphics, you'll see what a great free-roam RPG should be like... But I get your idea and think it's a great one. I certainly would buy such a game. Just not superhero-Oblivion.

Yeah, don't get me wrong. I only use Oblivion as an example because it's the only game of its type that I've played that was also critically and financially successful. I'm sure that Gothic and Morrowind could be equally useful models. I just want a game that is as comprehensive in its design and scale as something like Oblivion and has graphics on par with Crysis, COD4 or any number of next-gen games. Only difference would be that the 'hero' could fly and/or have any number of superhuman abilities. It's just be fun. There's so few superhero games out there and it'd be nice to break up the glut and have one like this.

We need for Superhero Rpgs.

The only ones we really have were the tactical ones such as Freedom Force and Sequel.

Ya, the problem is that the gaming market is so flooded with these comic book games based on real comics, and they all suck. The Hulk, Spiderman, etc. I think the only comic book-ish game out there that is any good is City of Heroes/Villains (from what I hear, never played it myself).

I definately agree that an open world game (a la Oblivion, like you said) thats about a comic book hero and some villains would be awesome. There are THOUSANDS of comic books made each year, all with unique plots, so would it really be that hard to make a genuine hero and plot for a video game?

Here's an idea: get Stan Lee on the phone and help him to make a game. Maybe for once a GAME can spawn a cartoon series/comic book series/movie. The guy is awesome I am sure he has sketches in the back of his closet that were too awesome for the mainstream.

I think the ability to choose your powers, appearance, and theme would be totaly awesome as well. Sooooo many possibilities.

Good thread!

oh ya, and NO CAPES! sorry had to say it.

Oh, speaking of the incredibles i think if they made it cel-shaded it would be awesome

And I, personally, wouldn't want it based on any pre-existing characters. The game should be completely original and your character, since you created it, should be original, from the sex, to the age, to the type of superhero you become, the powers you get, costume, .etc. I think that would be the best.

Just like if you took two players' Oblivion characters, odds are that no two would be exactly alike. I'm slowly starting to get burnt out on all of the 'elves and orcs' and 'shoot stuff' games.

Obvilion was one long, drawn out turd of a game and it spoilt my 100% game completion record I held for the last 2 years because it was so boring.

No, I remember playing Freedom Force and it was a fairly linear, on-the-rails type adventure game. I'm thinking of something more open-ended where the gameplay isn't so scripted. Whereas Crysis is a bit more open ended in a lot of the level design, COD4 is tightly scripted. My idea would be more like Crysis(not that COD4 wasn't fugging awesome), where you'd wake up as a regular guy or gal living a normal life in a normal city working a normal job and then you'd get thrust into some strange situation where you'd get superpowers and the game would go from there.

i think it'd be cool to choose how you get your powers too. Latent powers hidden in your genetics until puberty? Random encounter with a meteor while hiking in the woods? Exposure to intense radiation while walking past an army base? They could make it quests, like youre a park ranger and you need to check out this weird fire (the meteor crash), or youre a janitor at a military base conducting experiments (radiation).

Idunno, just a small part of the game, but it would be pretty sweet imo if each time you played the game you, like you said, wake up as an average Joe and get thrust into a situation where'd you get super powers.

Man, I wish I had modding skills. Im not saying Im a genius it would just be fun to pursue these ideas.

* another random thought. I was just thinking that, since you might have a job to choose upon character creation, it would be a theme throughout the game to maintain your cover, since thats a big thing with superheroes (spiderman, superman, batman, etc).

I'd play it if the quests had a bit more immagination than punching criminals in the junk and saving hot chicks. Big open worlds are great, but only if exploring them nets any reward.

It's really a brilliant idea you have. Too bad it would require some real creativity other than graphics and physics from a game designer. Makes me think of the movie Unbreakable, which was partly a turd, and partly a great idea. Ideas like yours are truly lacking in the video game industry anymore, which is a damn shame. Almost makes a person want to read books....

The character creation would also have to be really in-depth and varied. The great thing about superheroes is that they are unique.

I think there could be a lot of cool aspects to the game. You could have a cast of secondary characters; friends, family, co-workers, who are vying for your attention and whom you have to kept your superhero identity a secret from, all the while juggling a normal life. This could be interesting, like maybe one mission you'd have to clock in at work, report to your desk, be seen by a few co-workers, but then scamper off, hide, change into your costume and escape your place of employment to head off and fight a giant robot that's threatening an air base or something. I don't know, just something that would give you the feeling of being a superhero, where you'd actually get to role-play and not just grind like hell for crappy XP points like in some MMO.

Sadly enough, the only Super Hero games I am aware of that arent based on existing IPs are City of Heroes, Champions Online and Freedom Force.

But yeah, an open world super hero RPG would be great, the way you described it sounded very similar to a concept, I have planned for a few years now. It wont come to fruition since I am neither a developer or a modder.

Edit: Wow, this thread is oooold.

Rockstar can probably pull this off. They seem to be trying to fit their GT gameplay into just about everything. Might as well come out with a super hero game.

Since TC hasn't been online in a year, I feel I can say without compunctions that this is a really awful idea. No matter how I work it out in my mind the picture doesn't look good. Comic books superheroes are too much pointless baggage for this type of game. Anyways, we've gotten plenty of superhero games in the last four years, and several open world ones.

Hmm, why not make a mod, or get someone to make a mod, where you do develop powers in Oblivion?
