Hey, I'm pretty much a PC game n00b. I'm well versed in pc's, but not in new gaming tech. I recently got a new pc, it's very impressive for me, here are the specs: Intel Dual Core (5.71 Ghz), 500GB HDD, 2GB memory, dual dvd writers, 22" lcd monitor, media center, built in wireless router, and all the goodies. Only problem is that my video card is garbage. it's a geforce 7300LE. Basically, it lets me run halflife 2 at about 30fps, single digits with high activity. So, I got about $500-$600 to spend on a card, and was looking deep into the Geforce 8800 GTX. This seemed like an awesome idea to me, but my buddy told me that dual SLI cards would work better for me, even if I spent the same amount on the pair. So, can anyone give me any good advice on cards to buy? I'd really appreciate that!

if ur spending 500-600 then go for the 8800GTX. although there arent any dx10 games yet, but will be very soon, i think crysis will be out this month, not sure though. but go for the 8800gtx now, and ull be satisfied. in the future you can get a second card for sli, by then the price of the card will drop.

dual core isn't that good, good hard driv and memory, Your graphics card and cpu are holding you back. get a core 2 duo E6xxx and maybe an 8800 GTS since you have alot of money to spend.

sorry, guess i used the wrong wording. it is a core 2 duo. and i really appreciate the feedback. so i'll start off with the one card, and maybe get a second further down the line. and i have a reasonably weak power supply now, but i'm looking at a 550 watt ps to get pretty soon, i'll have it before i get my card in.

personally i would wait for the next line of DAAMTI cards to come on the market.the R600
you will need a rather large powersupply, and a large case for either the R2x00 series or the 8800gtx.

as for going SLI or getting the single 8800gtx, i would get the single GTX!!! at the end of the day, you could always add another to it, if you had SLI 7900gtx's you would have to start from fresh again, atleast with one 8800gtx your half way there ;) also, it all depends on what motherboard you have, or are thinking of getting?

PSU, if you want something to pass till you get more upgrades, i would get atleast 600w+ at the moment. if you look at my system specs, its running nicely on a 600+ enermax now, however, i darent push it any further! a nice kilowatt psu should last you through to the 2 card 8800gtx SLI, or the twin R600's..... but then for that, you are talking serious money (£200/$370)

Personally I would go GTX (or whatever ATI brings out) and skip on running a dual card set up. The performance returns you get for running two as opposed to one is nowhere near worth the extra cash. (You don't double the graphics processing power). The best thing to do is buy the best card on the market (currently the GTX) and save money to upgrade in the future when you decide the 8800 doesn't cut it. Some say go for a single card and then SLI in the future as an upgrade but honestly by the time you want to upgrade a single brand new card will beat two 8800's. Anyway that's my opinion - feel free to have your own =)

that seems to be the popular opinion around here! so, topic settled, sli is, in fact, worthless in this price range! 8800 gtx it is!

Yeh the 8800GTX beats two 7900GTX Cards in SLI anyway, plus the fact that it is DX10 makes it even more future proof.  I am however a little confused about your 5.71Ghz processor?  Can you tell me what that is?

Also, the 7300LE should be able to run Half Life 2 maxed out without any fram rate issues.  There's something else at play there.
