The game is "freeware" or "abandonware" now, so it is no more illegal to download it than it is to download any other free program (winrar, divx players, etc).

Who cares. The games been out of production for years. The devs and publisher are no longer making money off it. Lowest price on amazon is $39 used.
Google "download system shock 2" and the first 2 links are free downloads. Dont you think they would stop it if they were still making money off the game?
hey thanks guys for all the advice. i downloaded it but the game keeps crashing. and if i turn up the resolution i get an error. i may end up just buying the game after all. shinra41

Totally, I think I might even install it right now.
Found the actual game at my local nerd shop (comics, music, Warhammer figurines, and USED GAMES!) for 8 dollars, couldnt resist picking it up.

The more important question is, does EA even care?.. No they don't, the game hasn't given them revenue for years, they don't use it for promotions etc etc.. As long as you don't sell it EA honestly could care less..

Exactly, they dont care. Thats why its called abandonware. Technically it may be stealing, but practically I dont think any bad things will come out of it. And no, youre not a bad person if you download abandonware.
For example, I once took an abandoned couch from out front of someone's house. It was obviously going to the trash, but I need a couch and it didnt have stains on it, so I took it.

EA has been weird on this one. They own it, and clearly don't ever plan on rereleasing it, but have you ever wondered why Bioshock isn't called System Shock 3? The developers of Bioshock are the same guys that did SS2, but EA won't let them use the name. And the couch analogy is a little flawed, because copyright laws are a lot different from property laws.
All I can say is it makes me glad I have a copy.
The term has no legal meaning, and the name "abandonware" is something of a misnomer in that a given package may not be in the public domain . Hence a package labeled as such cannot necessarily be legally copied or distributed without the permission of the owner.Wikipedia, always true
