Is System Shock 2 still worth playing?

Played a demo or something a long time ago, but I was so young and scared.
Did not fully understand what I was playing back then. :D

Found it very cheap at  my local game shop.
Thinking of buying it.

So guys, should I go for it?
Please tell me what you thought about the game and if it still is worth playing. :)

The graphics are obviously dated, but that shouldn't stop you from playing one of the Greatest Games of All Time™.

Don't hesitate, buy it !

It's not too common anymore to find the game new in stores, so even if you don't like it, you'll be able to make a profit on eBay with it.

But that won't happen 'cause you are going to love System Shock 2. It's one of my favorite games of all time.

Cheers,

T.

I just checked out the screenies... It looks fun but if you are into the graphics as much as the gameplay itself like me then you should probably play something else. They should remake or sequel this game with better graphics so I can play :P

Get some of the mods too, it adds enhanced visuals. Shtup & Rebirth. And if you can't start the game because of some error, just open the cam.cfg file and add safe_texture_manager at the very bottom.

yes!Definitely!I replayed it recently (since there has been a shortage of decent PC games lately) and it is still one of the best games ever made!I would recommend also installing the updates, SHTUP and rebirth, which upgrades the  creatures and environments to better quality graphics.

YES. Unless you're a 'graphics-make-the-game' kiddie, I'd recommend this game over almost any other FPS around. It's not a game that advocates crazy firefights like many other revered shooters, but it has a diversity and depth that just makes it brilliant. The story is excellent and immersive, audio and lighting are used to excellent effect to make the game a thrilling experience. It's a creepy game, not in the 'rargh-omg-there's-a-zombie' sense, but in a moody, atmospheric sense. I could go on and on, but I'm sure you get my point. :P

I hope so very strongly that its spiritual successor (Bioshock. Check the previews, it's tipped to be a top-notch game) lives up to the greatness of the originals. It'd be the thing that finally motivates me to finally upgrade my cruddy old computer.

Just let me say this... THERES NO GAME NOW THAT CAN BUILD AN ATMOSPHERE AS SS2 DOES... The game is absolutely creepy... You are going to think twice before you enter a room or turn on a corridor... You will become paranoid and start pointing your gun in every direction after hearing those damn "psi-monkeys"... Not to mention that you will s***t your pants when one of those automated sentry drones is coming at you and your gun just breaks down after firing the first shot...

The game has everything: an RPG stats system, 3 different character clases, lots and lots of scary moments, and a great story. Its the dream of a gamer...

hell yes

system shock 2 is in my opinion the greatest game ever made - it does have flaws... a weak final 90 minutes, and the visuals are astoundingly bad now, even with the rebirth texture pack - but you should buy it, right, right now

some games don't age well, their gameplay may have been groundbreaking then, but now it just doesn't work, too much has changed... but system shock 2 is ageless, timeless - immortal

you owe it to yourself, all of you, to play system shock 2

Of course its worth to see the God Father. Its a classic. That doesnt mean that you will like it though... The same happens with SS2. The game is a classic. There are people that dont like it (not everyone has the same taste). But the game managed to breakaway the barrier of being considered "another game in the bunch". Not all games can do that...

my advice would be to get that game at Mach 7 speed...

that game is by far one of the most unique, intriguing, and well thought out games of all time..

i still play that game every couple of years...

get it  - play it - keep it

it's highly unlikely you'll find that anywhere else than  that store you're talking about ... kinda like when my local game store in Illinois, when i lived there that is, had an X-Eye game console for only $50... i didn't buy it then cause i was 10 and had no money... the next time i went it was gone... *cries*

one more thing:

just don't scream at your computer screen at the ending... you'll see what i mean

I actually started playing this game today and... WOW, it's completely blowing me away.

It's so intense I have a hard time continuing. What I love the most about this game is the voice-acting and the wonderful script. The only thing I'm not liking right now is the fact that enemies can spawn infinitely, it seems like a really dumb feature in an otherwise unbelievable game.

SS 2 wouldn't play on my system (fully updated, Win XP, Core 2 Duo, GeForce 8800) - maybe it's the dual core or the graphics card. Anyway, just a small warning. I really wish I could play this game!

System shock 2 is a good game, still fun today and hard to find aswell, if you have a chance to get it, go for it.

Although the graphics are poor now and it does detract from the horror of the game its still very fun and atmospheric.

Good that you got it, but too bad you paid for it. At least it was very cheap apparently.

The studio that developed it was shut down a few years ago (Looking Glass I believe), so the game has no rights attached to it, it's freeware now. You can download the whole game at Home of the Underdogs - you might have to do a bit of research though, as the link to the download is on an old page that was replaced or something. I haven't bookmarked it so I can't help.

I do NOT encourage piracy. This is legal, even more than buying it actually. Basically some retailers are still selling the few copies they can get their hands on because it's a net profit for them, they don't owe the developer anything.

I ALWAYS pay for my games, but my money should support the developers rather than the retailer.

SS2 is NOT freeware. Even though Look Glass shut down, EA owns the rights to it.

If you happen to come upon  Clive Barker's Undying, grab that one also.  It's another classic that is well worth playing from the old school.  The graphics are dated in that one, but it's the atmosphere which makes this game, same as System Shock 2.

Even though it's old, it's still one of the best games I've played. And if you get bored of playing SP the  game has full MP COOP. Alos there are mods out there to upgrade to graphics so that the games looks 2-3 years newer.

Some things are timeless, and just dont go out of style.

Pearl Jam, a mom's cooking, and....System Shock 2.  Its gonna always be worth playing, no matter how innovative or beautiful newer games become.

What you say might be true, but EA has made no attempts to prevent its distribution across the net.  The fact that it is still offered as a free game on a popular website lessens the fact that its actually piracy...thats word is a bit extreme in this case.

definately get it, and this goes for anyone who hasn't played it. it still scares me when i play it, and no other video game or movie is able to do that. Also, for those who don't know anything about this game, it's not an fps, and while we're at it, bioshock is not going to be a standard fps either, so i don't want to hear anyone calling system shock 2 or bioshock "generic" or "just another shooter."

Ya, its a really screwy law or loophole, whatever you want to call it.  Theyre not enforcning their copyright at the moment, but they could at any time and punish anyone who downloads/uploads it.  Sort of like a cop writing you a speeding ticket three months after you broke the law.

I played SS2 recently for the first time and beaten it. I'd have to say, it truly is the best FPS I've ever played and dominates what's out right now. Just be sure to download the high-res texture packs.

If you haven't played System Shock 2, here's the intro movies from the first and second game. You can find tons more movies on Youtube.

Great game. Just started playing it again on my xp media edition. But for people to say the graphics don't take anything away is almost true. I can't even seem to get slightly nervous playing it. Not after seeing the rectangular monsters attacking me. One of them looks like an early Star Wars sketch. Other than the fact that I can't seem to find the game spooky in the least, it's still worth playing. Now to zbiggie. Are you running with a dual core processor? If so there's a really easy solution. If not go to the looking glass forums and they should be able to get you up and running.

[QUOTE="BounceDK"][QUOTE="Jack_Summersby"]SS 2 wouldn't play on my system (fully updated, Win XP, Core 2 Duo, GeForce 8800) - maybe it's the dual core or the graphics card. Anyway, just a small warning. I really wish I could play this game!

Explain please... Are you getting an error or something (directdraw thingy) ?

The game starts up fine, but when I try to start a new game, it loads for a few seconds, then crashes to the desktop. I don't recall if it popped up an error message.
