i went into a computer shop yesterday to get one built, this is what i went in for

q6600 quad core 2.4ghz / 768mb ddr38800gtx / 4gb ddr2 ram / midrange motherboard (about 150 euro) / windows vista home premium 32 bitand a cheap kinda case

after about 45 minutes or so talking the the sales guy this is what i left with

q6600 quad core 2.4ghz / sapphire 2900xt 1gb ddr4 / 2gb ddr3 ram / asus motherboard worth 250 euro / vista ultimate 64 bit and and a massive alluminium gamer case with loads of fans and lights :|

it was saturday just before closing and he wasnt open today so i sent him an email telling him im not sure of the new specs but what do you guys think, im really confused, 2200 euro is a lot to just hand over without being sure

Oh dear. It's a good computer but vista ultimate just isn't worth it, the 8800gtx is still better than the 2900xt and unless your doing overclocking you only really need a midrange mobo. Also DDR3 memory isn't really worth the cost. I'm still using DDR:P

The 1GB ddr4 2900XT is a waste, DDR3 ram yields almost zero performance increase and is ridiculously expensive, you don't need ultimate. Stick with your original specs except, get a Gigabyte P35 mobo and an Antec 900 if you can. You wan't good cooling for those parts.

Your choice of the vid card was less bad (marginally) than the choice of the DDR3. It could be a year, or more before DDR3 shows any performance benefits over DDR2 and that will only be with the faster DDR3 of the future.

i knew nothing of ddr3 going in, he sold it to me telling me i needed to future proof the system, i didnt know ddr3 had such latency issues, and the card being 1gb ddr4 i guess i was just impressed by the large numbers dammit!!

future proofing you say? Let me tell you this: THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A FUTURE PROOF COMPUTER! It will just be longer before you have to upgrade... He's just doing his job and tries to get as much money out of you as possible. Stick with the 4gigs of DDR2 RAM and with XP (perhaps go for 64bit version? anyone?), DDR3 is not worth the cost and Vista sucks because of the lack of support from many software companies.

and 4 gigs IS a bit much, you can stick with 2 for now and your comp will still destroy any game

im not getting another 2 until I need vista

vista home premium is fine.spending addtional money to get both vista and XP is a waste, unless you have some very specific needs or you burn money and crap quarters. 64bit OS XP or Vista, is the waste.

If you got DDR3 RAM then you made a HUGE mistake (granted you probably didn't know at the time). Not only is that RAM overpriced. Its 50% useless because most motherboards FSB can't get near DDR3 speed (please go back and throw this RAM at his face).
