I purchased tf2 a while ago and it has always had slow times connecting to servers. It takes it 6 minutes the first time I try to connect than 3 minutes every other time. I have.... Defragged my computer, Defragged the .gcf files that make tf2 run, Defragged the game using the steam client, Ran the game on Lowest settings, Ran the game on Highest settings, Turned off my firewall, Ran the game in DX8 mode, Turned off precache, Turned off HDR, Set the process priority to high then back to normal. Nothing has made a single difference. Always 6 minutes to connect. My Specs: 8600gt 512 vram, P4 w/Hyper Threading 3.00ghz, SB Live! ct4830, 1022mb ram. Windows XP. What is happening to this game? Please don't just pass this thread by, I need help! I have been googling this s.o.b. up for 4 months now. I have also been posting help threads up like crazy on the offical tf2 forums and it's filled with a bunch of little kids that have no idea what to do. Please help. Please.

It might be your connection rather than your computer.

Although, what's your hard drive specs? Are you running RAID or anything?

I think this is because you have to download files... The first time I launched TF2, it took a while to download the core files and maps and stuff from the server.

If your friend connects to the server quicker than you:

1. As elemayo said, you might be downloading files

OR

2. Your internet connection is slow

Could be the server too. I know my connection times vary when I join different servers. Sometimes its almost instant, and sometimes its around 10-15 seconds even with around the same ping.

Steam games always have long load times. First you have to load the game... Then you have to load the menu.... Then you have to load the server... Yeah I wouldn't be surprised if it added up to 6 minutes

Are you connected through i router maybe? Could be that the ports used by the game servers aren't open to your computer.

Like others said the most obvious reason is slow internet connection. What is your connection?
