I haven't played TF2 in awhile. I just loaded it up and played a few rounds on pl_thundermountain (I think that's the name), and my FPS goes low during battles. I sometimes see 19, 20 FPS which is just absurd. I upgraded my computer in March and since then my FPS was always at 50+ in TF2. Why has it changed now?

My settings are maxed out. 16xCSAA 16xAF, Multicore Rendering enabled, etc. V-Sync disabled. I play on 1440x900.

Specs:

AMD Athlon II X4 630 2.8GHz
4GB RAM
EVGA GTS 250 512 MB
W7-32bit

I havent added any new drivers to my video card since like April so that might be the problem.

That sucks dude, some people have some FPS issues after the updates.

For me ive been lucky. My FPS stay 60-90FPS all the time.

Only thing i could suggest is check drivers, do a defrag or reformat.

Hm, thanks for the tips Kozzy. I'll be sure to try those. It's weird. TF2 almost felt unplayable at times. I just had to close the game. :(

Yeah, I noticed some stuttering too. Normally TF2 runs as smooth as butter for me.

I max out TF2 at 1800x1018 all settings with just a 9800gtx+ and get high fps. That's not the cause.

It does for me. I turn AA/AF off, is a phong graphics anyways.

Eh, theres too much factors into this. Some say they perform great, others with performance issue, but never quiet set it out straight with how they play tf2 top to down. I'll try to help here.

Q6700 @ stock

8800gts 512mb g92

3gb ddr2

1680x1050 + second screen running other stuff @ 1024x768, No AA, Trilinear Filtering, Vsync off, other bs on, high/very high.

I play @ Dustbowl/gr 32 and pretty much everything else in a big server. 30-100fps give or take excluding spawn.

Turn down your stuff to improve your performance. Poorly optimized game with all the updates pretty much slowed everything down.

AA is not the problem. Before I always ran with 16xCSAA and 16xAF I still got 50+ FPS. Even 100 at times. I'm using the same settings as I did before the update. I think it's just the engie update that's messing it up.

Did you try turning it down? Before isnt gonna comeback, look for a forward solution. Because every update adds more to the performance toll.

16xcsaa is quite high latest 200 series drivers came out in june and last but not least, 32 player servers can really slow you down as well. even has a dialogue menu that pops up and says that the game is not optimized for anything above 24 players ( ??? i think, not sure)

Find a different server? Or is this in any server you play in?

I mean, I've been playing TF2 just fine for the past week. I'm really loving the new update.

This always happens when a new update is out. Usually what I do to is delete the TF2 folder and then launch the game - It will clear out those old files that you don't need and improve performance. It may take a few minutes to launch as Steam has to rebuild (not re-download) the game files.

Valve added a new cvar with the engineer update, and for some reason it really hampers my performance (especially on the new maps, except for coldfront). Try putting this in an autoexec config: glow_outline_effect_enable "0"

OP, I'm afraid you've become a victim of the TF2 'curse' or 'FPS bug.' I too am suffering from this. Unfortunately, I can't give you a proper solution, as there simply isn't one; it's down to Valve to formally address this issue.

All I can suggest is to try this attempted user 'fix' of sorts:

http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1093560

For some people it's worked successfully, but for others, like me, it's yielded no results. If you search through the latter pages of that sticky, you'll see that a great deal of people are still complaining - and rightfully so.

See my recent thread concerning this very same issue aswell if you wish:

eh... if I was you I would turn down some settings. I know you shouldnt have to but TF2 is optimised like a dogs dinner these days. Its still great even with low poly models and a few low settings.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. And this is just any server I play on. Any random 32 player server. Maybe it's because I'm playing with alot of players? I tried playing with no AA at all, and all I got was 30-40 FPS. Still went down to 20 at times. And thanks for the cvar -Feath-, i'll be sure to try it out.
