I'll be honest in saying while I can enjoy the F2P model, I really, REALLY wish more MMO's would adopt the hybrid model of continuing to offer a subscription but not mandating it.

Games that go completely F2P a lot of the times really bug me in pushing for their shops sometimes.

I see that Guild Wars 2 already put his signature to gaming industry and marked to kill some games too if they repair their RPG advancment system.

The thing is that TERA was released as f2p in South Korea, so the monthly fee in western countries wasn't but a blatant scam. Now I'll probably give it a try, due the game looks really eautiful and the combat system, as in GW2, is a step above the usual point & click MMO. The weakest portion of the game seems to be the class system.

The subscription based model really is on its way out.

WoW, RIFT and EVE can keep it, but not many can.

As if the MMO market isn't so heavily saturated already...

shame how F2P is often equated with the death of a game.

Subscription MMOs need to die, I hate that business model.

However I played the trial for Tera and while it's pretty and the combat is excellent, it's a sh!t game otherwise. Quests are awful in it and the characters/story (if you could even call them that) are terrible too. If the game didn't have it's combat or look half decent no one would care about it. Sadly the combat doesn't save it, and the visuals while pretty are terribly inconsistent.

They release too many MMOs that people just keep moving on and on all the time. Blade and Soul looked cool but the combat seemed pretty sh!t.

As long as it's not SWTOR F2P, still waiting on that game to get good. If you're gonna copy someone copy GW2, best model IMO.

Actually no. 90% new MMOs fail miserably in Korea. People don't exactly move on to the next one, they try something new, and go back to their old games. Koreans are too busy playing LoL

It is RIFT that people care about right, not TERA? I know one is doing decent.

Why you say that? Blade and Soul is the second most played online game in korea as we speak , for almost a year now... Theres no way will go F2P , not anytime soon

The reception hasn't been good. There is a drought of contents, and with ArcheAge (which also looks like it might just fail) just going into open beta recently, it won't hold the spot for long. And a major update hasn't been up since 3rd closed beta.

I couldn't disagree more. I hate the new micro-transaction, so-called f2p, models. I'd rather pay upfront to get all the content instead of being nickle and dimed to death for every little thing.

With that said, this is the first time since the release of Everquest and Asheron's Call (96? 97?) that I haven't had an active subscription to at least one MMORPG. It's a shame, too, since I think the genre really does have a lot of untapped potential.

These games are being forced into f2p due to lack of sales and lack of subs, it is not because they chose to go that route.

Been looking for an MMO with combat similar to Vindictus. Might check it out.
