My friend keeps pestering me to try this game.  I'm not into building games but this one looks interesting cause it's more adventure oriented.

Thing is, we want to play together, so I was thinking of setting up a server at my home.

There are heaps of guides on the net but some are different from others.

Has anyone successfully set one up and has a link to a guide they used which was correct?

Do I need to open ports?

Does the server PC have to be strong?  it would be only 2 players playing.

Thanks.

It's fairly easy on your PC, you shouldn't have any problems running a server and playing. As for guides, I'd use this wiki: http://terraria.gamepedia.com/Terraria_Wiki It has tons of useful info.

Around a year ago I found a guide on the internet and had a server running in 5 mins or so. It was super easy. It ran really well on my Phenom II X4 too.

Thanks guys but here comes a silly question: Does the SERVER need to have the actual game and Steam running? Or just the server based application? I prefer NOT to put Steam on the server if possible.

I highly HIGHLY recommend you give it a shot, if you are still hesitant.  It is a lot of fun, and this from a guy that has only played it solo *foreveralone.jpg*

iirc the server launches from the game, not from steam.

For whatever reason I really liked this game more than I ever thought I would. I did try to set up a server but I didn't have much luck. Well, okay, I did but my eight-year-old nephew could never connect to it.  Not sure if it was my issue or his (probably his).

The game is tons of fun, spent around 200 hours on it over the years.

If you are having issues with setting up a server just use a progrma called Game Ranger. It works with terraria and people can join your game instantly.  I had one friend who could not join any of the servers so we tried Gameranger and it worked fine for him.

Thanks Koz... will give that a go if I can't get it to work. Does Terraria need open ports? Is it safe to host a server?

Definitely give it a go. Probably one of my favourite multiplayer games with friends. I sunk easily over 100 hours playing it with my buddies. Also to set up a server all I had to do was click multiplayer and join one of my worlds. Then anyone could join using my public ip.

Yes, you need to open a single port for it. By default, the game uses 7777 but you can change it to whatever port that isn't used by other application. If you don't feel safe about random people might find your server and grief it then set it so players requires password to get in.

I hated Minecraft and still do, but Terraria is one of my second favorite indie game of all time and one of the best games this gen.  It really is more of an adventure rpg.  The building part of the game makes it that much more enjoyable.  You'll see.  Definitely buy it!

That's literally all I had to.  I went into my modem settings and just opened the ports for Terraria.

LOL no not at all, you could even run this game on a toaster I bet.  Only 2 people will make you laugh even more.

I don't get it.

I run the "dedicated server software (1.1.2)." from the official web page and it gives me error.

Does the server need Steam installed with the game? Does Steam need to be running?

Cause my idea is to NOT run Steam on the server.

I bought the game on steam.

I never had to run any dedicated server software.

I always launch the game from steam because thats where I bought it.

What do you mean not run steam on the server?  Running a terraria server has nothing to do with Steam bro.

bro just watch this video

It's literally like I told you what I did, simply just port forward Terraria.

If you've ever forwarded a port for a game, it's no different now.  Easy as pie.

DEDICATED Server. You can run a server while u play, but I want to run a dedicated one so my friend can log in while I'm not online.

I figured out how to set up a dedicated server. You don't need Steam installed or running for the dedicated, just to play it on the client machines.

You could just use hamachi to make a VPN server, that's what i did to play it with a friend.

Oh dude. Late to the party. Ive never been so addicted to a game like that. Lucky for you Redigit will be releasing an update soon for the game with tons of new content and items. I hear the new item count is over 1000. Should hit in July along with a sale if you dont get it on sale during the Steam Summer Sales.

UPDATE: I got the server running (doesn't need Steam). It was actually quite simple. Now for a security question, how safe is it to have the server running? I have the game with password but can people hack into my network through it?

Probably not. VPN like hamachi might be more secure, but i'm no network expert.

I wouldn't worry about it, not to often you hear of people getting hacked for running servers, just so there friends can join.
