Steve Guttenberg (hometheater/stereophile/audiophiliac/CNET editor) has made a list of the best headphones from $22 to like $2000.

I guess STAX SR-009s for $5000 weren't included since Stevie G has claimed they were the best headphone setup ever. [/spoiler]

This list is unusually devoid of Stax (and the Koss ESP/950) at higher price brackets. I don't just mean the flagship SR-009 or SR-007, either. Needs more Lambdas.

Me either. Don't trust their opinions.

Also I have been hearing good things about the HE400s but I never understood the "Audiophile" side to earbud phones. They simply don't have the size to drive a great sound. But i guess you need to cover all bases

Oh geez, stop with the CNET hate people. He's not really employed by CNET, it says so in all of his reviews on their website.. "Steve Guttenberg is a freelance blogger and contributor to CNET but bla bla"

He's not your average CNET journalist, he's the mother fu**ing Steve Guttenberg, king og audio :p

He's a STEREOPHILE and HOMETHEATERREVIEW journalist, NOT CNET. Though he helps CNET with certain audio reviews/opinions.

I completely agree. and I was wrong about Steve, he deliberately said that the LCD-3s were superior to the STAX SR-009s in his opinion. He preferred the punchier bass etc. General consensus is probably STAX SR 009, Sennheiser Orpheus, STAX SR 007, STAX lambdas > Audeze LCD3, Sennheiser HD 800, Sony flagship (forgot name), Grado PS1000 etc..

That's nothing. The Stax SR-009 by itself is $5,000+, and you cannot even use an electrostatic headphone like that without a specialized amplifier to back it up. Most people spending that much will go for a Blue Hawaii SE if at all possible (they take a while to build), spending another $5,000 on it...or maybe they'll cut it down to $2,300 or so on a KGSS. And then we have the Sennheiser Orpheus systems. Some people are trying to sell their HE/90 + HEV/90 setups for $36,000 or so. Whether they'll actually find any buyers or not, I have no idea, but it's not helped that Orpheus hardware is rare (limited production run) and expensive to begin with. The original MSRP would make the HD800 look affordable by comparison. Headphone equipment can get stupid expensive, stupid fast, just like any other field of technology.

Pretty typical. Electrostatic bass presentation is something many people can't get used to, having been mostly exposed to dynamic drivers; the sound is very much there, but the slam/impact, not as much. I'm NOT a basshead looking for a head-rattling experience; instead, detail, clarity, soundstage/imaging (particularly with binaural HRTF mixing), and long-term comfort are what I primarily seek. That's probably why I enjoy electrostatics so much, though I haven't sampled too much aside from an SR-Lambda and an SR-202, between which the 30+ year old SR-Lambda won out for having a more pleasing midrange that renders vocals like few others can.

He's a respected audio reviewer and has reviewed more audio equipment than most reviewers out there.

Here's probably heard every speaker worth hearing and even then some. He'll review anything from a $5 pair of earbuds to $500,000 speakers.

I have no problem with any of his picks. He specifically says that they're his picks, not the best by consensus, which is what I was aiming for in the FAQ. I also haven't heard of many of the brands he recommends, which is great, since I get to weed through Head-Fi reviews and find out what other listeners thought. Great read; thanks for the link. Also, did you see Head-Fi's Summer Buying Guide? They've got more of a widely-accepted great headphones theme going on, and it's a good read. Happy gaming, Boz

Indeed I have read it.. Worth a thread on its own imo.
