I hate to break it to you, but WoW and EVE Online are the two best out there.
LOTRO is pretty damn good, and Age of Conan is all right, but unfortunately their communities are relatively small.
There have been a lot of good MMOs in the past, but unfortunately theyre dead. Tabula Rasa, Auto Assault, are two that come to mind.

This man speaks the truth and nothing but the truth, so help me god. I personally have played WoW, EVE, AoC, WAR, Aion, Vanguard, DAoC, DDO, and Allods. WoW and EVE are the only 'top-notch' games imho. Not to say other mmorpg's are worthless, they all have their own high and low points, but if you want an mmo that will bring you the intensity and feeling that you are playing a 'number-one' game WoW and EVE are the king daddys of mmorpgs right now.
I've searched for an mmorpg that could provide the satisfaction, the most intense and intelligent pvp, and the best player interaction that I got from playing WoW and EVE, it's just not out there. Aion is very fresh, intense, and unique in the pvp aspect, but that game certainly has some glaring low points outside the intense end-game pvp.
that was exactly my point. Thanks for not misunderstanding that.
WoW and EVE are the only two MMOs that really nail the fundamentals of MMOs (community, world, and gameplay) while also providing more such as incredibly good support, weekly updates, hours upon hours of additional content for free, etc.
In short, WoW and EVE are the only two MMOs that actually earn the monthly fee.
Now, that is not to say other MMOs are not good. Lord knows I enjoyed me some LOTRO, and AoC was quite innovative. And while they might do some things as good as WoW or EVE (and even a few things better). But there just is no reason to not play WoW or EVE. Unless you are burned out on them from palying them prior; and, in that case, youre better off not playing an MMO period than going to another one. Take a break.
But WoW and EVE are, as I said, the only games complete deserving of the monthly fee. Theyre polished, have incredible communities, and solid gameplay. I am also happy the two best MMOs on the market are also incredibly diverse; one is fantasy, the other scifi...one is traditional leveling and killing and questing, the other is unique and innovative.
