Can anyone advise me on what the best PCI-e GPU I can get that will not be a major bottleneck with this Intel Pentium 4 3Ghz 65 nm processor? i am currently using the 8500 GT 256mb and i wanna upgrade it.Please advise, this is very important and i can't afford to upgrade my cpu! I was hoping to get the ATi Radeon HD 4770 GDDR5 512MB. Is it to much of an over kill for the CPU?

You can't afford to upgrade your CPU? Are you sure? Because you can get an average CPU of lie 2.5GHz then easily overclock it to 3.0GHz (E5200) on stock cooling but thats assuming your motherboard supports dual core chips. It costs less than £50 as well.

P4 mobos does not support Core 2. EDIT: I stand corrected here. It depends on the socket on your mobo.

What about a 8800GT or a 260? Sure, the CPU will be a bottleneck in some cases, but so what? You will still get the best possible performance. Bust you'd better start saving up money for a bigger upgrade (CPU, mobo and RAM) - the P4 is getting very dated.

What slot your m/b has . If its agp which is the most likely considering you have a P4 then your options are limited to the 3850 and 4650 and btw even those 2 will be bottlenecked by the slow cpu

you dont have any choice but to upgrade you CPU.if your mobo supports core2 then get one, they are very cheap compared to their performance.with this P4,i would say dont bother upgrading your 8500GT.try and overclock your 8500 tho,i have one,and im using it with 690/900 Mhz with an additional fan.the performance is great compared to how low end this card is.

Yeah it's best for you to get a nice video card now and then upgrade or build a new system later. So yes get the 4770.

If your computer has an AGP slot and not a PCI-e slot, just get a new one. Else, go for the HD 4670, which is the cheapest card that will offer you decent performance, without being bottlenecked too mcuh.

Wrong, my Board supports intel CPU's ranging from the Pentium 4 to the Core2Duo. Just to let you know, I have a pentium 4, and it bottlenecks my 4650 which is quite a bit weaker than the 4770. Don't be surprised when your playing at 40+ fps and then it drops to 15-25 in cpu intensive areas, like mine does. However, I still don't regret upgrading to my 4650 from my Nvidia 7500LE, It's taken a lot of strain off my cpu and I have noticed overall my rig runs more effeicently than ever.

Ever heard of socket 478? I'd like to see someone cram a C2D into that socket.

Only Pentium D's are supported by the LGA 775 platform, and that is likely paired with an older Intel P965 chipset. The OP still has to list his motherboard before anyone suggests a processor upgrade.

Yeah, but not all Pentium 4's were Socket 478, many of them were LGA775.

Exactly, but the OP still needs to be cautious before proceeding with any sort of upgrade. He still hasn't clarified what mobo he has.

--EDIT-- Hmm, I reread my post, and I said "...only Pentium D's are supported by an LGA 775 platform". My bad. As you stated above, both Pentium D's and certain Pentium 4's are supported by S-LGA 775.

No are you crazy? Not just Pentium 4's and Pentium D's are supported by the LGA 775 platform! There is also the Pentium dual-core, Core 2 Duo, Core 2 Extreme, and the Core 2 Quad as well. What were you thinking silly?

Yes the Northwood and some of the prescot based Pentium 4's were socket 478. And something you probably didn't know is that the Early Pentium 4's were socket 423. Ha ha you just got schooled!

Mmm if a p4 bottlenecks your 4650, I wonder if my p4 (same as yours, 3.2ghz- if it's the 640 version) will bottleneck my 8800gs.

Ok well I just teasing, sorry bout that. Well all Pentium 4's support Hyper-Threading at least.

if he has the p4 with ht thats the 968 socket he could use duel cores and early quads but I doubt it it's gotta be the 775 one
