Skyrim is set centuries after the others I believe, so you don't need to know anything about the series to understand it.

No it's not continuous. Playing the previous games (mainly Morrowind and Oblivion) helps you understand some lore behind the areas, races and certain persons & creatures, but it's in no way required to enjoy the storyline and quests in Skyrim.

Elder Scrolls is more of a setting. There's a history surrounding the areas in the games, but the storyline differs between games. Skyrim is set 200+ years after Oblivion.

Playing the other games will help give you a better understanding of the world of the Elder Scrolls, but it isn't a single overarching storyline. And with Skyrim taking place 200 years after the Oblivion Crisis, you'll be fine just skipping the rest(although they are still great games that should be played because they're amazing)

No. A little experience with the other titles will help you pick up on the finer details in certain conversations and give the world a little more depth, but it's far from necessary. All TES games stand alone.

There are so many branching quests and side stories to tackle in those games that you end up forgetting half of the story in favour of finding ever scrap of information relating to what you're doing at any given moment.

I treat them as massive sandbox games (which is what they are) rather than story driven adventures.

Listen. Games like these are made so that anyone can get into it easily, but at the same time, someone who has been into the games since the beginning might get a little nod every now and then. Basically you can jump into it right now and not fear being overwhelmed by the quantity of mudcrabs being present on the shores.

they are seperate but not seperate. you can jump into one and get a good experience or you can play them all and have a further understanding of why things happened.
