I don't see this happening anytime in the near future. To me it seems more and more like the opposite is happening. Console game systems are evolving into Desktop PCs.

Although Intel and especially AMD have made big strides in reducing the amount of power needed and he heat produced by the CPU, nVidia and ATI have almost taken a step backwards when it comes to video cards. The cards are requiring more power, are producing higher temperatures, and are physically larger than video cards have ever been. All of this makes it especially difficult to scale everything down to be installed in a laptop, and kills battery life; which practically defeats the purpose of laptops, portability. Until they make a concentrated effort to reduce the "footprint" of GPUs, like AMD did with the Athlon 64 and Opteron CPUs, we're not going to be seeing laptops replacing desktops in the near future. And even then, desktops will still have an advantage in price for some time.

Desktops won't die....in the near future you'll see a rise of monitors with integrated PCs in the monitor (google for the Gateway One or the Dell XPS One). Why the heck would anybody want a 24" laptop. Laptops also don't look cool on a desk - a sleek 22"+ monitor with a cool keyboard + mouse does.

Edit: This doesn't mean I think integrated PCs will replace desktops, because they wont either - they do have far more potential for taking over the mass markets than laptops though.

I would have to disagree, if I were buying a computer that cannot be upgraded (Laptop, integrated PC) I would at least want it to be portable. An integrated offers nothing a normal PC doesn't have. At least a laptop can be easily moved around.

Most people are forgetting something BATTERY LIFE !!!, many say laptops are very portable, can run games, yes they can, they heat up like hell too, battery don't last long, and most of the time laptop hardware is not supported like desktops are (Unless you have a pricey alienware, ) and one of the biggest flaws of laptops integrated propietary hardware, when the time comes to change the graphics card your stuck there, IF you ever manage to upgrade your video card for something decent, your Battery won't last much, So until most of these problems go away, i'll say Desktops are here to stay, I love laptops, Just not for gaming.

Exception to the rule. It also consumes less power than the 8800GTS, which besides the excellent performance, helps make it the great card that it is.

Laptops are still no good for real gaming but there is no doubt that laptops are gaining in popularity, usually as s second or third PC in the house.

It's hard to think that mobile computing will eventually replace desktop computing. Not all the components in desktop computers shrink just take a look at the new line of graphic cards from NVIDIA, the 8 series DirectX10 Cards. Having two of these cards in my system actually required me to buy a bigger full tower case to accommodate. Sure the Intel Core 2 processor I have is insanely small but the heatsink more then makes up for its change in size. I think that the smaller devices tend to get in computer technology the more ways developers and hardware manufacturers are going to find ways to fill in that excess space. Sure it might lead to smaller overall components in the future but instead of shrinking the size of the case required, they are just going to find some new device or technology to integrate into the motherboard to occupy the additional space left behind by the penny sized processors.

Let's wait till whenever the 9 series cards come out.... Though I have to say that I was quite impress with the 8800 GT.
