OK, first what's your budget?

Motherboard
CPU
Memory
Graphics Card
DVD-RW
HDD
Case
PSU
Keyboard/Mouse
Monitor

Those are the essentials for a solid gaming PC.

Just state your budget and whether or not you're going to keep using your monitor/KB+M and I'll be happy to set out a rig for you. ;)

Also, most if not all motherboards have integrated sound.

jjc273, where do you live?

BTW, your basic computer has 9 parts and 4 peripheral parts.

the 9 parts to a computer are:

Power supply

Motherboard

Case

CPU

Memory

Hard drive

optical drive

Video card

and the operating system

the 4 peripherals are:

monitor

keyboard

mouse

and speakers

Sorry, I went and ate some pizza.

OK, I don't know too much about the UK market prices, but I here this is a good shop to go to:

http://www.scan.co.uk/

Anyway, I'll write up a list, but you'll have to do the monetary calculations:

Motherboard: abit IP35 motherboard

CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E6420 (July the 22nd, the Q6600 Quad Core will drop down to $266 US)

Memory: 2GB (2 x 1GB) of DDR2-800 from manafacturer of your choice (Corsair's XMS2 usually)

Graphics: 8800GTS 320MB (from XFX or EVGA) for a tight budget and moving up to the 8800GTX or 2900 XT on the high end.

DVD-RW: Just look for a DVD-RW Drive that can burn dual layer DVDs and burn CDs. Also, choose the DVD to go with the colour of your case and preferrably have the Serial ATA (SATA) interface. IDE is fine, but the cable is pretty annoying.

HDD: Western Digital's SE16 with 250-320GBs is the current sweet spot. WD also make some quiet and cool running drives.

Case: This one is really up to you. Choose an ATX case which goes to your tastes and preferences and has good airflow (usually two 120mm fans, one for the front intake and one for the rear exhaust). For starters, companies like Thermaltake, Cooler Master, Lian Li and Silverstone are favourites. But go with a case that YOU like.

PSU: Corsair HX 520w PSU is built like a tank and provides clean power too. It's also quiet and efficient to boot.

Monitor: To take advantage of both the GTS, GTX or 2900 XT (because bigger is better), you should aim for at least a good quality 20" screen. That 17" screen is puny and unless you're on a tight tight budget, you should opt for a larger display.

The first one, the 8800Ultra is better but it is overkill.

Just get the 8800GTX, its a great card, the Ultra is just an overclocked version with a massive increase in price...

I agree-the Ultra is unnecessary! By the time the GTX is outdated, the Ultra will be as well, so it doesnt get you any further!
