May i ask why?cluclap
Sure.
Most of the hype and the appreciation it received was because it was one of the first games to use 3D and FMVs, utter bullcrap to be honest. Games that mix 2D and 3D or simply use only 2D were much better graphically and artistically (take a look at Star Ocean: TSS, for example), so the "OMG 3D" is a thing a lot of people takes out of their hat with no real reason other than ignorance.
FMVs, sure we all can give it that, it's still untrue. Take a look at SC's movies, even though they have a different way of being made they look parsecs ahead of FMVs.
Story? I don't really know what to say about it, it simply looks flat from when you get near the end of the first disc on...Sephiroth's *revelation* was so pathetic I couldn't believe what I just saw when the cutscene ended, what the heck was people thinking when they claimed Sephiroth as badass?
The end of the first disc was said to be touching, wasn't it? Maybe for flint or some other tender rock it was.
During the second disc, the parts that were most annoying the ice cave part, when the Weapons and Cloud's "past" are revealed to you. A failed experiment that NOW wants to be labelled? Kinda feels like a joke to be honest; and when you are forced to use Cid for no real reason. I mean, why not let Tifa, or Barrett, lead? Who gives a damn about an old geezer you probably didn't even care about before? And now he's even the leader of the group, that's just perfect.
Oh and I almost forgot, Hojo's "I am his father" was probably the first time I really felt sorry for somebody, if I knew the name of the one who thought this I would have sent him a handful of bucks to help funding his mental illness treatment.
The third disc is mostly free roaming, and that's fine. The only facepalmish flaw is the very last fight, when Cloud hears Sephiroth laughing and faces him one on one. So, Sephiroth woke up for good and was one-hit-killed without even trying to put up a fight. Sure that's really the power of someone who almost erased a planet.
The combat is so awkward I can't even fathom how can people actually enjoy it. It's the worst system I know, only peered by NWN2's. Not even Tetris has such a horrible way to handle killing, it's a turn based system where the only reason to use a friggin turn based system was taken away, because the turns don't matter as long as the turn timer (is that how you call that yellow bar?) is filled.
The characters were MEANINGLESS. This is a perfect example of what does "overcustomization" mean. There is virtually no difference between each character, you just have to choose the party by your personal tastes because of the Materia system.
All in all that pretty much sums it up. Sound was actually very good, some minigames were plain frustrating(Mogs, OMG!!!) and others turned out to be quite fun (skateboarding, the motorbike smashing, that LOLSTEALTH in the Shinra building, there are others but I don't remember them at the moment).
I would have given it barely a 7, I'd like to know how some people think this game is actually "the PSX's best" when its supposedly strong points were actually incredibly flawed...
